Charles Stross’ award-winning The Laundry Files RPG is going strong with its 2nd Edition, in its final week on Kickstarter.
The Laundry Files helps fulfill a particularly resilient tabletop fantasy: being in a labyrinthine bureaucracy that has a retro-future aesthetic and who busy themselves investigating the occult. It’s something that surprisingly few games tackle. There’s Night’s Black Agents a hack of GUMSHOE, and the upcoming Triangle Agency. But dealing with subject matter like the SCP files or games like Control or shows like Loki just hits something really resonant in the human psyche.
Maybe it’s the idea that there’s some mundane force that is already cataloguing the strange and horrifying out there. In a nutshell, you roll a pool of six-sided dice, trying to beat a difficulty class set by the DM. The more dice the better, and there are things you can take to manipulate that die roll, like Talents. It’s a fast play system that works to give you the opportunity to be one of the myriad staff in the Laundry.
