Goatboy here and today I want to talk about the top things 40K needs changed as we head towards the end of 2024.

As we stare down a Warhammer 40K 10th Edition meta that has been fairly locked down for months, we have to think: where are the “issue armies” right now?  We need to think about things like tweaking some points, simplified rules updates, and just an overall shift to try and even things out across the factions as we close out 2024.

Standardize Every Surge-like Rule

Right now have a few armies that can abuse this Surge rule – aka the ability to move after getting shot at and how they interact with units if they “hit” them.  Thin of units like World Eaters Berzerkers, or the Blood Angels’ Death Company Dread. I think just making all those interactions work the same across the game would be helpful.  The first thing would be put a limit on how many times a unit can do it. This way, when we deal with units that have a ton of wounds/models they don’t get a chance to do it 2+ times and get synced-in.  The next change would be making sure that every type of surge can “get” into engagement range, or all of them cannot get into combat.  We need a distinct locked-in answer across factions with this type of rule, so everyone is on the same playing field.

Points Updates Still Needed

Speaking of Surge rules – there is no way Accursed Cultists won’t get points increased with the latest big wins by CSM this past week.  The fact we are seeing them in other lists tells me I can expect them to show up a few more times as CSM move towards the top of the meta.

Dark Angels most likely will get hit with the Death Wing Knights going up to match some of the other Terminators out there.  They are just very tough. Plus, when you have an army that can have tough things as well as ton more other special potent rules it becomes an issue for the game.  It does suck that the current good Marine army is the Dark Angels or a Pile of Black Templars.

I get the feeling Sisters of Battle will get shifts too as the current Bringer of Flames build still has a ton of models on the table.  They look to be pretty rough on the tabletop and I wonder what they will get shifted in their points.  It’s a strong codex, so we’ll see what GW does to even things out for the Sororitas.

Thousand Sons needs to get tweaked as well – especially since there isn’t a codex coming anytime soon.  There are a few things too cheap in the index, especially things like the Mutalith and other “high” damage things.  It really, becomes an issue if they can do so much damage.

Oh and I hope Astra Militarum Bullgryns get updated to lose some of their “toughness” as they just have too many rules for too cheap of a cost.  Thankfully a codex comes out soon so will see what shifts for them and what comes out too cheap.  Or too expensive is the hope.

Some Minis Are Getting Hard to Find

Did you see how the Navigator is now a heavily sought-after model?  Did you see what boxes it came in? I think it just comes in a Blackstone Fortress boxed set.  It looks like it is a separate kit now too and it is insane to think that this 35 dollar model is needed to protect the backfield. Why didn’t this get shoved into one of the “battleforce” like boxes?

Oh have you looked at how cheap Suppressors are points-wise?  Have you also looked at how you get them from GW?  A single boxed set named Vanguard that comes with a ton of other stuff you don’t need?  Is it worth it to try and get them for a Blood Angels army? Good luck!

I know there are some others but it gets hard to build the army you want sometimes.  In some ways it helps that I love World Eaters right now as there isn’t a ton to pick from and while I want some new models for the army – I hope it isn’t crazy like some of the other lists.

I am pretty sure points are what is coming next and there shouldn’t be a Balance Dataslate update till next year.  I hope the points come with the Blood Angels points we should see next week.  Are you happy with the meta so far?  I know I don’t want to paint three units of Accursed with Dark Communes.

What things do you want to see updated next in 40K 10th Edition?
