Sometimes playing a game once isn’t enough. You want that game to ripple through the echoes of history forever. Well, that’s legacy games, baby!
Recently, we took a look at Avatar: The Last Airbender – Aang’s Destiny, a great new legacy game that carries the players through the story The Last Airbender series. But it got me thinking that for all of these themed lists, like deck builders, worker placement, or dungeon crawler, I haven’t done one for legacy games. Today, that changes!
In no particular order, here are some of my favorite legacy games out there today.
Pandemic Legacy
Pandemic Legacy is so good, it is not just one game, but a whole series of games. People bicker and argue over which is best, but honestly, they’re all great. Each has a unique story to play through and its own twists and turns.
What makes Pandemic Legacy so thrilling is the high consequences of each game. Because any city could theoretically go under at any time, it can drastically hamper your ability to progress into the campaign. A lot of narrative legacy games the players are “expected” to win. You’re the heroes after all. But, Pandemic Legacy isn’t always so kind.
Betrayal Legacy
I’ve never been shy about openly admitting my love for the Betrayal games. They’re wild, crazy, chaotic fun. But Betrayal Legacy takes that theme and opens it up in a new way. You build your own mansion and explore each nook and cranny while playing through the “board game experience” that will be different every time you play.
If you’re a fan of Betrayal at House on the Hill, this is the best way to play. When it’s all said and done, you have a mansion filled with your own unique design and memories. Just like a truly haunted house.
Risk Legacy
In general, I’m not a huge fan of Risk. And before you start getting on my case about how it’s probably only because I suck at the game, yes. Exactly. That’s precisely why I don’t like Risk. But Risk Legacy is a different story. I’m still awful at it, but at least now I know my defeat will have still affected the world in some way.
My legacy might be pure and utter defeat, but at least I have a legacy.
Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated
Clank! is just another fantastic series of games. Solid deck builder, semi-dungeon crawler, risk-management; Clank!’s got it all. Layer on top of that a legacy element and a theme around a very fun animated series that was doing D&D podcast style storytelling before it became crazy popular, and now you’ve got something very special.
Frosthaven
Of course. The grand mac daddy of all legacy games is Frosthaven. It’s offers up the deepest level of tactical combat, overall grand strategy, city building, RPG character management, economic elements, and so much more. If you have somehow gotten this far into the board gaming world and you don’t know Frosthaven, I have a few questions about where you’ve been.
BoLS might make a few bucks on anything you buy from these links. But, be honest, you don’t enjoy randomly browsing online stores. So let us do the annoying part for you. Help us help you.
