There’s a new batch of rules previews from Games Workshop showing off the Astra Militarum. For the Imperial Guard!

The Astra Militarum is the next codex on the way and they have a lot going on under the hood. Today we’re getting a look at how GW has updated the datasheets within the book. Infantry Squads, Heavy Weapon Teams, and Command Squads will all function a little different now based on their point of origin.

In the new Codex: Astra Militarum, three of the most famous regiments – the Cadian Shock Troops, the Death Korps of Krieg and the Catachan Jungle Fighters all play a little differently under new core infantry options.

There is now a separate datasheet with individual loadout options and rules for Infantry Squads. Heavy Weapons Teams and Command Squads, offering more chances for strategy and synergies.

Cadians

The Cadian Command Squads will come with the Cadia Stands rule. This grants cover against ranged attacks for units that have an officer in them. The Cadian Heavy Weapon Squads also come with Covering Fire which ups their odds to hit when using the Fire Overwatch stratagem.

This is a potent way to really beef-up your defensive line. When you combine all these units together in a tight, defensive formation you’ll get a very dangerous Cadian ball of doom. Just shooting it is less effective for your enemies. Charging it means you’re going to take a lot of fire from Overwatch. And not doing anything means getting pummeled from the withering fire power of the Imperial Guard. What’s it going to be?!

Death Korps of Krieg

The Heavy Weapon Teams of the Death Korps are hardcore. With Final Duty, on a 3+, they still get to take a shot even after they have been destroyed. Brutal. And their officers from the Command Squad bring Grim Determination with them. This allows the units that contain an officer to still receive orders even if they are Battle-shocked. They won’t quit on you!

Catachans

The Catachans are still the valiant jungle fighters they have always been. With Bring It Down their Heavy Weapon Teams are perfectly suited to take down all sorts of big prey. Meanwhile, their Gung-Ho Command has their officers leading the charge because they provide their attached units with [Assault] on their ranged weapons!

The real trick for Astra Militarum players out there is figuring out how to use all these tools together. That’s how this army is going to rise above their “non-genetically modified superhuman status” and fight against the super soldiers, absolutely alien xenos threats, and infernal heretics that surround them on all sides. Welcome to the Guard.
