Marvel Comics has many great storylines for future Crisis Card Packs. Here’s a few we want to see next in Marvel: Crisis Protocol!
The War of Kings Crisis Card pack introduced a new way to use the Crisis Cards in Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Along with just being new Crisis Cards to use for your games in general, you can also use them as a basis for a campaign/narrative game mode. This is all done by simply pairing up the respective Crisis Cards and then playing the missions that have been formed.
When I got an interview with Will Shick about the pack he talked about it’s creation. It seems like it was a neat design space to work within. Coming up with missions that were fun to play and also fit the storyline that was being told was a tall order. But I think that the team at AMG did a great job of touching on those key storyline beats.
That said, I personally am hoping this new style of Crisis Card pack isn’t just a one-off thing. I’m not asking for a new Crisis Card Pack every couple of months, however. What I’d like to see is more of these packs that dive into particular storylines from Marvel. And I’ve got a few suggestions…
Civil War (2006)
I don’t know if the Civil War event in Marvel needs much of an introduction. But if you’re not familiar with the story event the basics are that the Superhero community was split between wanting a Registration Act vs not wanting one. I’m super simplifying things here as it’s a complex issue. But I think this could be a great excuse to have all these heroes fighting each other on the tabletop regardless. I highly recommend checking this one out in comic book form if you haven’t. There’s some really cool story beats here that could become future missions. I could even see this being used with “assigned” teams or special Affiliations if you wanted to really get into it. AMG has a lot of options here.
Secret Wars (1984)
Man, talk about a CRAZY event. The OG Secret Wars was basically the first ever “mega-crossover” event for Marvel Comics. Sure, there had been crossover characters and storylines before…but not like this. I don’t think I can accurately articulate how big of a deal this was at the time.
This event had the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spider-man and the Hulk all teleported off Earth. They had to face off against foes like Galactus, Ultron, Doctor Doom, and the Enchantress — all on the planet of “Battleworld.” This was a BIG arc for Marvel Comics and it’s worth a read. I also think the idea of Battleworld could be a fantastic set of Crisis Card Pack missions.
Obviously, we’d still need a few characters introduced before this becomes a thing. The Fantastic Four, Galactus, and Doctor Doom being the main ones. Shoot, I think it would be even more impressive if AMG put together a terrain pack set for this type of release, too. Oh I’ve got ideas…and it could be awesome. But I’m getting ahead of myself. The point is that Secret Wars could be a “mega-crossover” for Marvel: Crisis Protocol in more than just narrative missions.
Annihilation (2006)
The Annihilation event was a massive, galaxy ending threat. The funny/sad part is that Earth’s Mightiest heroes were too pre-occupied with another event to help stop this catastrophe from happening. Luckily for the rest of the universe, there were other heroes who stepped-up.
Personally, I think this event is underrated. It got overshadowed by the Civil War event — but that was also kind of cool because it explained by the Superheroes on Earth were busy. Anyhow, this event also featured a bunch of characters that (at the time) weren’t super well known. They were really given a chance to shine and I honestly think that’s part of the charm of this event. This was a massive Marvel Comics cosmic event story and the heroes out in the cosmos had to deal with it.
This is another cool event that I think could turn into a pretty neat set of narrative missions. However, I do think a big problem is the antagonists for this event is Annihilus and the Annihilation wave. Why would the Crisis Teams be fighting to ensure the wave succeeds when it means the end of all life in the galaxy? I’m not sure! But hey, if Thanos allied himself with Annihilus (even if was just out of curiosity) then I guess it could work.
There’s so many to choose from…Dark Phoenix, Secret Invasion, Avengers Disassembled…What major storylines do you think would make for a really cool set of Crisis Cards in the future?
