Astonishing Adventures April!

The book that put Green Ronin on the map was a D&D adventure called Death in Freeport (see my previous roundtable The Origin of Freeport). This was followed by Terror in Freeport and Madness in Freeport, creating what’s known as the Freeport Trilogy. In those early days of the d20 System adventures sold well, but as time went on a typical problem for RPGs asserted itself. Namely, that adventures sold worse than sourcebooks. We continued to sell adventures, but our focus definitely shifted to sourcebooks. We could sell books like the Shaman’s Handbook and Cavalier’s Handbook to players and GMs, a much bigger pool of people than the GMs who bought adventures.

As we launched new RPGs of our own though, I always thought it was important to provide some adventure support. First, they show people how the games are meant to be played. Second, they make it much easier for groups to get a campaign going. Designing your own adventures is great, but most folks don’t have the time to create a campaign from scratch. Over the years, we did some sizable adventures that could keep groups busy from 6 months to a year. The first was the mega-adventure Black Sails Over Freeport. Later, we did big adventures like Dragon’s Hoard for A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying (our Game of Thrones RPG), Emerald City Knights for Mutants & Masterminds, Envoys to the Mount for Blue Rose, and Abzu’s Bounty for The Expanse RPG.

As part of our 25th Anniversary, we’ve dubbed this month Astonishing Adventures April. It’s named after a series of Mutants & Masterminds adventures that debuted in 2020. We’d certainly published M&M adventures before (starting with Time of Crisis back in the 1E days), but the idea of Astonishing Adventures was to provide a steady diet of (mostly) short adventures released in PDF format. This worked well enough that we collected six of them into a print booked called Astonishing Adventures Assembled. Along the way we couldn’t resist doing some linked adventures too. The biggest of these was the magically themed NetherWar, which ultimately included a prequel adventure, five more adventures, and a free series guide for players and GMs. Just recently we finished the Time Travel Trilogy.

To celebrate Astonishing Adventures April, we’ve got several special bundles on sale. If you are new to Mutants & Masterminds, the Adventure Awaits bundle includes print and PDF copies of the Basic Hero’s Handbook and Astonishing Adventures Assembled. The Arcane Adventures bundle collects all seven NetherWar PDFs. Then the Level Up bundle has five PDF adventures, plus print and PDF copies of Astonishing Adventures Assembled for a total of 11 adventures. If you’ve been wanting to start a Mutants & Masterminds campaign, this is a great time to get all the adventures you’ll need!
