Magic: The Gathering – Tarkir: Dragonstorm Collector Booster Displays captured the top spot on the April 2025 TCGplayer Top 25 Sealed Products Chart (see “April 2025”). This brand-new chart offered insight into trends developing in the TCG market.
While the rest of the games industry is under tariff siege(see “Erratic Tariff Policy“), Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon TCG are off collecting fans’ income tax refunds and taking market share as if it were a bright, sunny spring day in the U.S. economy. Although Magic topped the list this time through, Pokemon TCG still ate up half the slots on this list. Both of these TCGs are basically printing money at this point, and with the Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy reportedly experiencing very heavy preorders (see “Hasbro Raises Guidance for WotC“) and Pokemon TCG getting ready to launch a split expansion (see “Split Expansion Announced“), this trend is probably not ending anytime soon.
As a point of note about these two TCG giants, Pokemon TCG seems to have a better “street buzz” than Magic: The Gathering right now. Magic: The Gathering seems to be doing really well in the hobby channel, as longtime fans are pretty stoked about the upcoming sets. Pokemon TCG is a totally different animal at the moment. It seems like anyone and everyone is trying to buy the newest Pokemon TCG sets from wherever they can find them; mass, hobby, secondary sellers, sports card dealers, antique malls, or even out of the back of an old Winnebago. It doesn’t really seem to matter where fans buy Pokemon TCG as long as they can find Pokemon TCG to buy! Pokemon TCG is definitely a hotter IP than Magic right now, despite Magic topping this particular chart.
Another interesting development, brought to light by this chart, is the return of Bushiroad’s Weiss Schwarz to the Top 25. Goddess of Victory: Nikke is apparently the hotness in U.S. TCG markets, and sold through really well to make the chart. This is no small feat for Bushiroad, as to even make the TCGplayer Sealed Chart these days the product usually needs to outsell a number of Pokemon TCG SKUs just to be considered. It will be interesting to see if Bushiroad can keep the ball rolling forward with their upcoming Godzilla CG release (see “‘Godzilla CG’ Deets“).
