Transmutation spells are perhaps the most diverse group in D&D. They do everything from controling the wind, to changing your own self.

Transmutation is one of the biggest schools of magic in D&D. With more than 100 spells (across multiple books, including Tasha’s Cauldron and Xanathar’s Guide which are still, technically, playable), Transmutation has a wide range of options available to it. Including controlling the weather. Making metal superhot. And, perhaps most iconic, letting characters be who they truly are.

The right spells can transform your character in ways they never thought possible, but perhaps always dreamed of. Which is why we’re looking at five iconic transmutation spells that are sure to transmute any character into your favorite.

Alter Self

This spell is like Disguise Self but better. Instead of merely looking on the outside like someone different (and having the illusion fall apart the second someone tries to touch you or scrutinize you), Alter Self actually changes your physical form in several ways:

For one, it can give you gills and webbed fingers, allowing you to breathe underwater and have a swim speed the way you have always wanted to. For two, it can change your appearance, letting you decide what you look like, your height, weight, facial features, sound of your voice, hair length, coloration, and other distinguishing features – and you can keep changing as a Magic action, meaning your physical form can be as fickle as the party’s Rogue. And finally, this spell lets you gain Natural Weapons, claws, horns, fangs, or hooves, that you can use to deal 1d6 damage (and your Spellcasting modifier) when attacking.

Fly

Have you ever wanted to soar above your enemies? Staying well out of reach of your enemies while you rain arrows/fire/whatever else down upon them? Obviously yes. And the Fly spell lets you do exactly that, becoming a leaf on the wind, so to speak.

You can even outrange the mighty Tarrasque (just make sure you stay 60 feet away and you’re golden, chonko can’t pick up a rock and throw it, so you can just plink away with a magic longbow and there’s nothing he can do to stop you). Just, you know, bring a lot of arrows with you.

Speak With Plants

Have you ever known someone with a green thumb? Or dreamt of being the kind of person who makes your GM play a bunch of really weird little guys? Do both with the Speak with Plants spell. This spell transmutes you into the kind of person who can speak to plants by imbuing them with limited sentience and animation.

Not only can you ask them questions about their day, which is of course the first thing anyone that talks to plants would want to do, you can cause them to become Difficult Terrain, or cause naturally occurring Difficult Terrain to become unhindering.

Enlarge/Reduce

Do you ever wish you were a little bit taller? The Enlarge/Reduce spell can’t make you a baller, nor give you a girl who looks so you can call her, nor will it give you a rabbit in a hat with a bat or a ’64 Impala, but it can at the very least do the first thing. Because Enlarge/Reduce is all about being the big or little guy of your dream.

This spell makes you do more damage and gives you advantage on Strength checks when it makes you bigger, and does the exact opposite when it makes you smaller. If you’re not sure how, go ask Alice.

Shapechange

Finally, the ultimate Transmutation spell. This one lets you be who you’ve always wanted to be. Especially if who you always wanted to be is a dragon or something like that. Because with the Shapechange spell, you completely become another creature – you transform into another form with a challenge rating equal to or lower than your current level, and you gain their statistics and abilities.

You retain your own mental stats, alignment, persnality, hit points and hit dice, proficiency, plus your ability to cast spells, if you have it. Which, if you’re casting this Transmutaation spell, you definitely do.

Then you can head out there and breath fire/lightning/ice/acid/poison on whoever tries to get in your way.
