Games Workshop has released three new free detachments as part of the quarterly updates for Warhammer 40,000.
If you can’t believe it’s June already don’t worry — neither can I. That said, GW is a little shocked as well but at least they planned ahead because we’re getting three new detachments to try. There’s one for the Chaos Space Marines, Dark Angels, and the Tyranids.
“Continuing our new trend, we are once again releasing three new Detachments with this Warhammer 40,000 update. With the latest update you’ll be able to use new Detachments for the Chaos Space Marines, Dark Angels, and Tyranids. “
Now, each on of these detachments gets a full suite of goodies. They have new detachment rules, enhancements, and stratagems. So let’s tackle each one of these detachments.
Chaos Space Marine Detachment – Cabal of Chaos

The Cabal of Chaos is really focused on the Sorcerers of chaos and how they interact with the army wide Dark Pact rule. As long as your caster stays close to a wellspring of warp energy they get to activate these bonuses. Thematically, these are quite fitting as they have different effects based on the unit type (either regular Psyker or Daemon Prince).
Furthermore, many of the enhancements are bonuses to your Psykers or Daemon Prince units, too. There’s a few goodies in there for-non Psykers but you can tell by the name this detachment is leaning into the cabal aspect of chaos. So load up on the Psykers and/or Daemon Princes and go to warp-town.
Dark Angels Detachment

I’m not really sure why GW felt the need to give Chaos traitors yet another detachment this round, but here we are. I’m positive there’s other loyalist Space Marines out there that could have used some love. But instead we’ve got the Dark Angels getting the Wrath of the Rock. Perhaps if they weren’t traitors they would have more to their home planet besides the remains of a floating fortress.
Anyhow, the Dark Angels are getting a boost to their survival rates with Dutiful Tenacity. Any time a Adeptus Astartes Infantry or Adeptus Astartes Mounted unit is targeted by an attack with a strength that is greater than their toughness, you subtract 1 from the wound roll. Jokes aside, this is pretty huge. It for a good chunk of attacks that might be wounding on 3s, they are now reduced back down to 4s to wound. That’s going to make even your basic Infantry unit that much tougher to take out. Imagine getting hit with plasma shots on your Primaris Units and only getting wounded on 4s instead of 3s.
Another nice thing about this detachment is that it’s got a good spread of bonuses for both the Deathwing and Ravenwing. Again, there’s also a full set of Stratagems to use, too. I guess the Emperor is merciful to those who repent and turn back away from chaos after all.

Tyranids Detachment – Subterranean Assault

Finally we have the Tyranids and the return of Subterranean Assault. This has been a rule that’s been used in previous editions but it’s back once again this time in detachment form. What does it do? To start, it’s a flat re-roll 1s to hit for all Tyranid models. Does it have your attention yet? To follow that up, when a Burrower unit arrives on the tabletop, you can place a circular 40mm Tunnel Marker within 1″ of them and more that 3″ away from all enemy units. Now, when you setup a unit from reserves, you can use that Tunnel Marker to deploy from.
Your units still have to be wholly within 9″ of the marker and more than 6″ away from enemies however. These markers can be destroyed by the enemy simply by moving within 3″ of them. Regardless, this is a nice way to launch some surprise assaults. But really, that flat re-roll 1s is just nice.
The Stratagems and enhancements really lean into this burrower/tunnel attack play style, too. There’s ways to ensure you get your reserves on the battlefield regardless of the mission. My personal favorite is the option to upgrade a Trygon back to a Trygon Prime.
