This Gen Con is going to be a tasty one, folks. Free League unveiled two new Lord of the Rings RPG starter sets to debut there.

As we head down the month-long road to Gen Con, I’m sure we’ll keep seeing more and more news about what to expect at this year’s con. It’s going to be a big one, from the sound of it. Case in point, Free League just unveiled two new starter sets for its Lord of the Rings RPGs. That’s right, both the One Ring RPG (which uses its own rules system), and the 5E-compatible Adventures in Middle-earth are each getting a new starter set in Indianapolis this year.

Two New Lord of the Rings RPG Starter Sets Bound For Gen Con

As has been the case for most of the releases in Free League’s LotR lines, both starter sets will cover the same sort of ground, just with slightly different rules interpretations. And this being a starter set, which means all the familiar starter set bells and whistles: pre-generated characters, a few maps, and of course, custom dice, the contents of each box will vary slightly depending on which version you pic (mostly in terms of dice).

But what about the adventures themselves? Well, you’ll be diving feet first into what makes the Lord of the Rings RPG different from regular 5E (compatible or not) in these starter sets. Starting with a dive into what it means to be in a Company (adventuring party), and the journey rules.

Of course, it being a starter set, everything is a little streamlined. More accessible, even if it’s not the full picture:

“‘Not far ahead were dreary hills, rising higher and higher, dark with trees. On some of them were old castles with an evil look, as if they had been built by wicked people.’

You are enjoying a rare, quiet evening at the inn in Bree when a hunter joins your table to share a tale about a dark threat looming over the North Downs. However, you are not merely simple guests at The Prancing Pony — you are members of a Company. It is your self-appointed duty to inquire about the bone-chilling dangers that might emerge from the houseless hills beyond. Are you ready to take the road to adventure?

These new and beginner-friendly Starter Sets for The One Ring™ tabletop RPG and The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying 5E, based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, provide all you need to embark on your journeys in Middle-earth. Immerse yourself in a world set between the time of Bilbo’s first adventure and the events of The Lord of the Rings™, exploring the Lone-lands of Eriador and taking on the roles of characters whose stories are yet to be told.

Here’s what you can expect to find in either starter set:

  • Condensed rules for action resolution, combat, councils, and journeys
  • The complete adventure Over Hill and Under Hill, bringing the heroes deep into the wild lands of northern Eriador to face a dark threat
  • A large full-color map of the lands of Eriador, with a combat stance diagram on the back
  • Beautifully illustrated cardboard stand-up figures for Player-heroes and Adversaries for use on the combat diagram
  • Five pre-generated and illustrated Player-heroes
  • Special dice engraved with custom symbols

And when you pre-order one of these, you unlock the immediate digital/pdf copy on DriveThruRPG!
