The Black Templar are getting a showcase of their new rules. Let’s see what changes Games Workshop is making to the chapter.
Games Workshop is pulling the covers off the rules for the upcoming Black Templar Codex Supplement. To kick things off, let’s check out their overarching army rule for including them: Heirs of Sigismund.
If you can follow these straightforward army restrictions then you too can have have access to the Black Templar’s potent vows. Speaking of which…
Black Templar Rules Preview
“Each vow is a solemn do-or-die promise to perform in the eyes of the Emperor. Black Templars follow their chosen Templar Vow with unshakeable conviction – never keeping their eyes off the prize even as other Space Marines chop and change their Oath of Moment target from turn to turn. “
The Vows of the Black Templar are really what sets this army apart. Sure, they have unique units as well but these rules can help you to customize and focus your army in distinct ways. These vows do actually replace the Oath of Moment Army Rule from the Space Marine chapters. So you’re going to want to choose wisely.
If you’re going up against a psyker-heavy army then Abhor The Witch, Destroy The Witch is quite potent. But personally, I think Accept Any Challenge, No Matter The Odds is pretty universally useful. The extra +1 to Wound rolls vs tough targets is super handy.
Suffer Not The Unclean To Live sounds like it could open up a few charge/pile-in tricks for sure. Finally, we have Uphold The Honour Of The Emeperor. This gives Infantry a big boost to playing the Objective game. Not only do you get to hold objectives even if you move away (until your opponent takes them), you also get to perform actions even if the unit Advanced.
Theses Vows are a BIG part of the Black Templar army. So if you’re going to play them you better get used to how they function. It’s going to be the difference between victory and defeat!
Black Templar Detachments
The Black Templar are also getting three new Detachments in their Codex Supplement. Below we’ve got a few teasers for those rules, too.
First up is the Vindication Task Force. This one might sound a little weird to veteran Black Templar players because this one really focuses on the Objective game. You’re going to forgo a few bonuses for getting closer to your enemies in exchange for boons to take and hold objectives.
This play style is going to take some getting used to for sure. But it does mean that these Black Templars will move to the objectives faster and be tougher to dislodge, too.

Consecration Aura is a nice enhancement and feels like a call-back to previous editions with that 5+ Invulnerable save. And a Stratagem like Refusal to Yield is basically a “free” Ancient. You just pay the CP and you get to return a destroyed Ancient model back to the tabletop!
As for the other two detachments we only get some teaser text. The “Companions of Vehemence” Detachment grants re-rolls for all your Charge and Advance moves.
“Finally, the Godhammer Assault Force is for those who think that walking is too mundane for the Emperor’s own angels and would rather hurl them up the battlefield in the safety of an armoured Transport. Many of its rules have a little extra oomph if the target hopped out of a Transport that turn, and if that doesn’t make you see endless squadrons of Land Raiders disgorging Sword Brethren when you close your eyes, you need to indulge your imagination.”
So there you have it. The Black Templars are looking to kick off a new Crusade soon enough. Are you ready for them?
The Black Templars are gearing up to go on the move once more!
