The Conjurer Wizard does exactly what you think it does—as long as what you think it does is “teleport around the battlefield”.
Conjurer Wizards are one of four new Wizard subclasses explored in the Arcane Subclasses Unearthed Arcana. And of all the options out there that could have been “you cast Misty Step all the time” subclasses, it is the one that you might have thought the least likely to be all about Misty Step. And yet here we are. The new Conjuration school focused Wizard is very heavily teleportation focused. Though in its defense, it’s not technically Misty Step—and there is an unexpected precedent for it.
Conjurer Wizards – It Weirdly Makes a Lot of Sense, Hear Me Out
Now here’s the thing. I get it. The Conjurer Wizard sounds like it should be a class all about summoning friends and making them powerful. You here conjure and it usually is in the context of spells like Conjure Elementals or Conjure Woodland Beings. When you think of Conjuration spells, things like Summon Celestial probably leap to the forefront of your mind.
But do you know what else is a Conjuration spell? Misty Step. And Teleportation. Teleport Circle, Dimension Door—in fact, all of the teleport spells are in the Conjuration school of magic. After all, conjuration is all about defying distance. So weirdly enough, this is perhaps the single most appropriate Misty Step-based subclass.
It’s even in the description of the subclass:
“You consider distance and matter to be flexible guidelines rather than physical laws. Conjurers harness the powerof magic that moves creatures instantly through space and summons creatures to fight on their behalf.”
Of course, you’ll probably end up doing more of one than the other. But hey, at least when we get to the whole teleportation thing, know that it actually does make an internal kind of sense. Let’s get to it!
That Transposition Seems Rather Benign
I will say there is no getting around the fact that it does feel weird that the Conjurer’s main focus is on teleportation. It is a fun kind of teleportation—you don’t just Misty Step around the battlefield. At level 3, you gain Benign Transposition which can be a short teleport, or a tactical repositioning teleport wherein you swap places with a willing creature. Here’s how it works.
As a Magic Action, you can teleport up to 30 feet. Alternatively, you can pick a Medium or smaller willing creature within 30 feet, and you both swap places on the battlefield. You can use this once per Long Rest, but can refresh it by spending a 2nd level spell slot. Initially this is a slightly worse Misty Step. But don’t worry, this is the core feature of the Conjurer Wizard. The whole subclass basically revolves around this ability, so it does get better as you level up.
You also get Conjuration Savant. This lets you pick two Wizard spells from the Conjuration school whenever you become a Conjurer Wizard, and whenever you levelup , you get one Conjuration spell for free. All of the School of Magic Subclass Wizards get their own specialized school of magic version of this, so it’s no surprise.
Conjurer Wizard At Higher Levels – More Teleports For Your Money
If you thought once per Long Rest was too little for a feature around which your whole subclass revolves, don’t worry, WotC has your back. Eventually. At level 6, you gain Distant Transposition. This feature increases your transposition range to 60 feet, making it better than Misty Step. More importantly, you can use it once per Short or Long Rest. This is a huge get that means you’ll be teleporting all the time. Even if you have to spend a 2nd level spell slot on it, you can feel good knowing that you’re doing something no one else can do. Even those Misty Step having guys.
You also get Durable Summons. This, finally, nods to the Conjurer Wizard being a summoner of any kind. It is one of two whole features that touch on the “summoning spells” side of the school of magic. And it’s not bad: whenever you cast a Conjuration spell with a spell slot that summons or creates a creature, it has twice your Wizard level in temporary hit points. You get it earlier than the 5E version, and it scales as you level.
And at level 10, you gain your second non-teleport feature as a Conjurer Wizard: Focused Conjuration. Taking damage can’t break your Concentration on Conjuration spells. For the record this is probably one of the best ones. Conjuration has a surprising amount of Concentration spells in it, and you can cast all of them and still get hit and be totally fine. Especially since there are a number of “aura” spells now that want you to get up in the enemy’s business, I think this is a real solid boost in power.
Finally at level 14, you gain Quick Transposition. This lets you use your Benign Transposition as a Bonus Action. It also gives you the option to use it as a Reaction when someone makes an attack roll against you—you can swap places with a willing creature (like your Fighter friend) and then that creature swaps places with you and becomes the target of the attack instead.
All told, cool stuff. We’ll have to wait and see if the final version of this subclass comes out the same way. But it gives you a few fun toys to play with for now. Take it for a spin at the link below!
Summons, teleports – the Conjuration school also has a lot of AoE spells that linger, like Cloud of Daggers!
