Green Ronin has unleashed a full-fledged 240-page playtest edition of Mutants & Masterminds 4E. Do more than test drive the new rules.

Green Ronin has released a full-on playtest version of the new 4th Edition rules for Mutants & Masterminds. If you’ve never tried it, Mutants & Masterminds is one of the best superhero RPGs out there, with rules to help you do everything from street-level heroes to cosmic guardians who punch dimensional imps for breakfast. And with a new edition in the works, this could be your chance to help shape the future of the game.

Mutants & Masterminds Playtest – Origin Edition

Newly released on DriveThruRPG, the 4th Edition Hero’s Handbook is a 240-page playtest of the new Mutants & Masterminds rules. You can get an idea of what’s different in the new system right away. Start making characters, with the new and improved character creation process, and more.

Some of the immediate differences in the system are a shift back to just six core ability scores. Fighting and Dexterity are out. The reaction system has improved – everyone gets a reaction every round. And that change means making new stuff based on reactions. Social skills even get a nice little buff, for those charming heroes out there.

Powers have been tweaked. Particularly the Impervious and Regeneration powers. Gear has been overhauled. There’s a lot of little updates that make the game feel a lot more fun.

“The Origin Edition contains a complete playtest version of the upcoming Fourth Edition oft he game. Contained in its pages is all you need to create heroic characters, play out epic super-battles, thwart the schemes of the vilest villains, and save the world – all with just a single twenty-sided die!

Try out refined power creation effects, updated hero achetypes, an adjusted rank scale, new advantage and action options, and more, all with the same fast-playing system M&M is known for. Then share your experiences and feedback with us to determine the final form of the next edition of the game.”

The new edition of Mutants & Masterminds hopes for backwards compatibility. That, as always, remains to be seen. It’s a challenge, but depending on how much they overhaul the monsters/enemies rules, it might not be too tricky for GMs once the final dust has settled.
