The Nighthaunt are getting a new battletome and Spearhead up for pre-order. So is this new Spearhead box a good deal?
Games Workshop is releasing a wave of undeath this weekend. We’ve got the Flesh-eater Courts and the Nighthaunt armies both getting a new battletome, new character, and a Spearhead box. Now, we already did this for the Flesh-eater Courts so it’s only fair we do it for the new Nighthaunt, too.
Nighthaunt Spearhead: Cursed Shacklehorde Pricing Breakdown
Contents
Spirit Torment w/Chainghasts $45
Total Individual MSRP: $191
Total Savings: $46
Overall, this Spearhead box isn’t exactly tearing up the discount isle. If the price point stays at $145 then the savings is basically covering the cost of the Spirit Torment box. To be fair, that’s not a bad thing by any means. But the reality is that this discount is hardly as impressive as some of the others we’ve seen. The Flesh-eater Counts was a discount of $80 as an example.
Pricing aside, as a Spearhead I do like this force. You’ve got some harder hitting Nighthaunt options and good supporting units. I’m a little bit more curious about the overall rules changes for the army, too. I’d really like to see the warscrolls for these units in the new battletome before I make any further judgements.
Peat, Repeat, or No-Peat?
As of right now, I’d at least call this one a Peat with the possibility of a Repeat purchase. If you’re brand new and looking to start a Nighthaunt army the Spearheads are generally a great starting point. Heck, even if you just want to dabble and try your hand at painting these ghosts it’s a good box. None of the units in the box are unique. And, as of publishing this, the Dreadscythe Harridans are out of stock online. This might be the best way to get your hands on them.
I’m also saying that it’s a possible Repeat because I just don’t know what to think about the Nighthaunt rules yet. I want to get a better look at the full army options because that’s really going to determine the value of doubling up on a few of these units. While you can get a sense of the points for the army now, the Nighthaunt are getting some fundamental reworks. It’s not all doom and gloom. But it’s also not a bunch of army wide buffs either. To me, it feels like a mixed bag and I’d rather sort through it with ALL the options than just go based on what’s been revealed so far.
I definitely think that one box of the Nighthaunt Spearhead is a safe bet due to being able to use it in Spearhead games. It seems like a strong core overall but I’m just on the fence about two or more copies. I’d probably wait on that second purchase for this one if you wanted to expand your Nighthaunt collection. Besides, the Nighthaunt does have a pretty good range right now and there might be other units more interesting to add. But we need to get a look at the battletome to determine that.

One copy is probably a safe bet even if the discount isn’t as impressive as some of the other Spearhead boxes.
