It appears that a trio of armies are shaping up to be outliers. Games Workshop has a Balance Update for them.
Games Workshop has access to a lot of tournament data these days. That enables them to pick-up on trends and also to take note of armies that might be over (or under) performing. Well, it appears that Knights (of both flavors) as well as the Death Guard have been on a hot streak. Time for GW to pump the breaks on these armies.
“There are thousands of Warhammer events being held around the world every year, and this produces a huge amount of data for the Warhammer Studio about the games and how they are being played. The rules teams in the Studio are then able to make changes to improve the playing experience for Warhammer players everywhere, whether they’re battling it out at a Grand Tournament, or across their mate’s kitchen table.
…
In the last few weeks, it has become apparent that three factions – Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, and Death Guard – are having the run of the field.”
New Munitorum Field Manual Points Out Now
If you’re wondering why this Balance Update feels off of the typical schedule that’s because it is. Games Workshop was saving this one for next month. However, the Leagues of Votann release window caused a points update needing to be issued for them. GW used that opportunity to also update the Imperial Knights, Chaos Knights, and Death Guard.
So what actually changed for these armies? For the Knights (both Imperial and Chaos) they basically were too cheap, points-wise. So GW upped their points between 15-30 depending on the unit. Additionally, the Cerastus and Questoris Knights have gone up between 30 and 40 points. Canis Rex, as an example, went up by 35 points. One other change was the Warp-borne Stalker enhancement has been increased by 15 points.
As for the Death Guard they also got hit with a points increase. They were similarly found to be too much bang for the buck — or in this case too tough for the points. That was letting too many tough units on the battlefield too cheaply.
“The Biologus Putrifier, Deathshroud Terminators, Foetid Bloat-drone, Foul Blightspawn, Lord of Virulence, Myphitic Blight-haulers, Plagueburst Crawler, Poxwalkers, Tallyman, and Typhus have all had increases by between five and 20 points. “
GW’s goal with the Death Guard changes was to implement these smaller points changes across a wide array of Death Guard units. Ideally, this would cut down on the overall number of Death Guard units by one or two in a game. Hopefully that brings them more in line with the rest of the armies without overly penalizing the Death Guard players.
It’s a big batch of points increases for these armies. So if you were playing them you absolutely need to go in and check the points. Which you can find right HERE.
