Hey look who’s finally back. The Imperial Knights are returning and are ready to bring on new detachments to the tabletop!

So after some “warp malfunctions” the Imperial Knights are finally getting their codex update. That also means new rules to play around with for these big, stompy machines of war. Being piloted by a noble/feudal lord means that they may have their own personal goals. That’s reflected in the Deeds and Quality rules for the Knights.

You’ll still be swearing Oaths on the Code Chivalric, but these are a good bit more flexible this time – letting you choose the Deed and the Quality separately. You also get an extra option for each, and if you randomly determine your Oath, you get the full three Command point reward when it’s fulfilled.

It’s neat that you can choose one option or opt to roll for two. It really depends on if you’re feeling lucky. This should all relatively familiar. That said, we’re going to dive into the big news: Imperial Knight Detachments!

Imperial Knight Detachment – Questoris Companions

The first detachment we’re covering is the Questoris Companions detachement. It’s the one you’re going to want to choose if you’re really into attempting to complete those oaths. Heroes of Legend allows you to choose another oath after completing one so you can keep adding more and more bonuses to your knights.

If you think this sounds like fun (or maybe a bet nutty) that’s kind of the point! The good news is for the Knight players, the Enhancements and Stratagems are also designed around helping you complete those oaths.

Most of these are one use abilities. However, they refresh when you complete an oath. I think you can see the playbook here. Need to destroy some units? Maybe popping that Pennant of Silvered Fury would help out with that.

Or maybe you need to get into the enemy backline to target a particular character. That’s where Moment of Glory might just help you out.

You could even dump your CP that round to use Unstoppable Warrior to really get your Knight were you need it. They need to get to the glory somehow, right?

Didn’t the Knights get a points increase recently? I can start to see why…

Imperial Knights – Gate Warden Lance

Up next is the Gate Warden Lance. This detachment comes with the Dauntless Defenders rule.

Essentially, this rule allows you to draw a line on the tabletop and say “No further!” The defensive line ability gives a nice boost to your Knights and I think creative players are going to find some crazy angles to play with between objectives.

“Three of their four Enhancements kick in when your Knights stand on this defensive line, the Acquisitor-at-arms pumping up their attendant Armigers’ Objective Control characteristic. The other two improve your close combat and ranged attacks respectively, but our personal favourite is Vengeful Tread, because slamming a Knight into the enemy for a pile of mortal wounds is always the correct course of action.”

As for the Stratagems, you’re going to like these for your Knights. They help you take the hits and also help you dish them out even harder. They do revolve around being on that defensive line…but you were going to be playing around that anyhow, right?

You can see how this play loop works as well. Keep your knights on the line to rain fire and stay in the fight. You don’t have to stay on that line the whole time, but you might not want to move off it until the end game.

It’s an interesting concept. I think the Knights are going to have a lot of options when there’s loads of objectives on the tabletop to draw that line from.

The Imperial Knights are on the way! Are you ready for these warmachines to come marching to the tabletop?
