Apocalypse World is an RPG that launched a whole torrent of others. And now a 3rd Edition is in the works, coming soon.
Apocalypse World is an RPG that changed the whole game. For the better, I think. Focused on genre emulation and player moves, Apocalypse World has left a big mark on the tabletop RPG sphere. You can tell because so many games are “Powered-by-the-Apocalypse”. You’ll find all sorts of titles, including Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Monster of the Week, Avatar: Legends, Flying Circus, The Sprawl, The Veil, the list goes on.
Even games that take a slightly different form with their dice, like Blades in the Dark or Ironsworn, trace their mitochondrial path back to Apocalypse World and some compelling, creative hacks thereof. Which is why it’s so exciting to see a new edition on the horizon. 2nd Edition came out in 2017, and the RPG landscape has shifted dramatically since then, I can’t wait to see that the new edition brings. Even though we’ll all have to.
Apocalypse World 3rd Edition Kickstarter in the Works
The Kickstarter “notify me” page for Apocalypse World 3rd Edition, or as it’s titled Apocalypse World: Burned Over went up over the weekend, and has since garnered over a thousand followers. There’s no official launch date yet, but you can sign up to know the second it launches.
The title gives us a clue as to what you might expect from a 3rd Edition. Because there is already a supplement for Apocalypse World called Burned Over. Created by the original designers, Vincent & Meguey Baker, it’s hailed as a “deep redesign” of Apocalypse World, and which the creators have said is how they’d design Apocalypse World if they designed it today.
Now, it seems a safe bet that the Burned Over “hackbook” isn’t just getting copy and pasted into whatever 3rd Edition will be like. Especially since right there on the existing document it says “it’s not yet a stand-alone game”. But they introduce a lot of interesting concepts, rewrites of the basic moves, settings called Hard Zones that have their own mechanics—so I’m excited to see what would make 3rd Edition a stand-alone game. Here’s a teaser:
“50 years ago, we set fire to the world. It burned and burned. The world’s psychic maelstrom howled. In the ashes were born heroes, grief, monsters, terror, violence, hope. Something’s wrong with the world and everyone knows what it is.”
So yeah. This one’s going to be worth following on and seeing how it develops. In the meantime, there’s a whole shelf of games Powered-by-the-Apocalypse to try out there.
