They say war never changes, but do they know about the democracy-loving, nuke-tossing giant robot known as Liberty Prime?

In the Wastelands of Fallout, you can, if you are lucky, come across remnants of the world before everything was changed by nuclear apocalypse. Pre-war technology is better than most of what you can find in the Wastes. You might come across a forgotten medical facility, full of life-saving medicine that the world no longer knows how to manufacture.

Or, you might come across a many-stories-tall, nuclear-capable giant robot that can shoot lasers out of its eyes. If that’s the case, you’ve probably run into Liberty Prime, an emblem of the war that ruined the world of Fallout.

Liberty Prime – Freedom-Protecting Design And Democratic Capabilities

Liberty Prime was designed and built in the good ol’ U.S. of A. It was a joint project between the US Army, RobCo Industries and General Atomics International that resulted in one of the most terrifyingly effective war machines the former United States had ever seen.

Liberty Prime was intended to be the “very embodiment of American military might – a walking, talking, nuke-tossing hero who will remind the world what it means to be a super power,” to use the words of General Constantine Chase, overseer of the project. And indeed, Liberty Prime proved to be a superweapon.

Liberty Prime was built with a heavily armored chassis, using technology developed for the Protectron line, scaled up and made military-grade. This protected it from even the most dedicated firepower. Even in the two centuries that have followed, Liberty Prime withstood onslaughts of advanced weaponry, even direct hits from high-explosive warheads couldn’t bring it down. Not all at once.

And it packed a punch. Literally. Its robotic limbs were capable of delivering terrifyingly powerful punches and kicks. Liberty Prime was known to rip Vertibirds out of the sky, or tear down enemy defensive structures. And when not being used for giant robot hand-to-hand combat, Liberty Prime carried an arsenal of tactical nuclear bombs that it threw like footballs. A symbol of American accomplishment. One reduced to a tool of propaganda and legend by the devastation of war.

Liberty Prime – A History Of Tactical Democracy

Liberty Prime was built for the Sino-American War that would kick off the nuclear annihilation of Earth as we know it. However, Liberty Prime didn’t actually play much of a role in the war. Because the pre-war science teams were racing the apocalypse. And the apocalypse won. Liberty Prime’s chassis, voice module, and weapons systems were all complete. But they couldn’t develop a power source compact enough to make Liberty Prime mobile.

It wasn’t until around 2255 that the Brotherhood of Steel discovered Liberty Prime within the construction bay of the former Pentagon. There, they toiled to solve what the pre-war engineers could not. And eventually found success with a device known as the Accelerated Vector Fusion module.

The Brotherhood of Steel used Prime in a war against the Enclave in the Capital Wasteland. Liberty Prime proved to be the asset its designers hoped it would be. The Brotherhood won victory after victory against the Enclave with Liberty Prime’s enthusiastic drive to protect democracy.

However, the Enclave eventually managed to disable Prime through a barrage of warheads. Only truly impressive devastation could take down the massive war machine. And it cost the Enclave dearly to do so.

Liberty Prime languished for a while until a cabal of scientists from the new Commonwealth found the ruins of Liberty Prime and took to reconstructing the weapon. To the point where Prime played a role in the War of the Commonwealth. Which just goes to show that even when destroyed, you can’t keep a democracy-loving robot down forever.
