January is New Gamemaster Month, and publishers/creators across the RPG community want you to run your first game.

There’s something about January that seems perfect for new beginnings. Maybe it’s because the month’s namesake, Janus, looks both to the past and the future. Maybe it’s because the full force of the year has yet to sink in. Whatever the case, RPG publishers, creators, and fans of all stripes want you, yes, you, to run your first game. Because, among other things, January is New Gamemaster Month.

New Gamemaster Month – Get Ready To Run Your First Game

New Gamemaster Month is a community program with participants from across the tabletop industry. You’ll find companies like Monte Cook Games, Chaosium, Darrington Press, and others. If you head over to the program’s website, you’ll find a full list of the teams involved, but rest assured, it’s an expansive one.

But how does this help you? Well, if you’re a newbie GM, this is one place where you can find folks to help teach you the skills and gain the confidence needed to become a GM. It’s a four-week long program where you’ll find posts every Tuesday and Thursday through January 29th. In each post, you’ll find advice on things like familiarizing yourself with the rules and setting, or wrangling players and scheduling.

You pick the game you want to run for, from a big list of games, including Numenera, Monster of the Week, Savage Worlds, and Daggerheart. And then just follow along with the posts – there’s “homework” accompanying each one. This week, it’s time to get the rules of the game you want to run, and start reading them. There’s a surprisingly personalized guide for each game; it’s not just a generic “fill-in-the-blanks” amounting to ‘read the starting section’.

A Great Way to Start Your Year!

What a way to find a community right at the start of the year. GMing is often an activity that’s surprisingly lonely, given that you’re the one running your games. So if you want to find other people who GM, or want to get some friends involved, you can sign up at the link below.

It’s just getting started. And if you’ve ever been curious about where to get started running your first game, this is a perfect place to jump in. There’s nothing quite like running a game. It’s not for everyone, but if you have the temperament for it, it’s a thrill in a category all its own.

Find out for yourself by following the link below. You can also find a full list of games with “support” from the New Gamemaster Month program, as well as various community portals if you want to find other people just starting their GM journey.
