There is a new reboxed kit for the Separatist Alliance. Say hello to the AAT Battle Tank in Star Wars: Legion!

I was really looking forward to the new tank kits coming to Star Wars: Legion. To be clear, there was a previous version of this tank but this is the new kit for it. Thankfully, Atomic Mass Games sent me a review copy and I’ve got the chance to showcase this new kit. And it’s a big one!

While I’ve built vehicles for SWL before, I’m pretty sure this was the first kit I’ve had the pleasure of building that’s this size for the game. So yeah… let’s get into the box!

AAT Battle Tank Unboxed

The assembly instructions are available from the QR code and everything else is included in their own bag. So this is pretty standard AMG packaging at this point. The sprues are in one bag, the cards in another, and the very large base is in yet another bag. Oh and apparently there’s a clear plastic stand that had it’s own bag which I had dropped on unpacking. Oops. But we’ll get to that later…

The sprues are here all laid out. Honestly, this build didn’t look too bad based on the sprues. They aren’y exactly dense with bits so everything was really easy to clip and clean. There’s also the option to build the droid commander coming out of the top hatch. I opted to skip that option. So that’s an entire spure I didn’t use.

What I also found interesting was the crescent-shape part was actually two parts that were pre-assembled. Now, I don’t know if that was intentional or not. I’m assuming that someone put the parts together for packaging reasons. However, there’s also the chance that it somehow slid in place while in transit. I bring it up because the instructions showed them as two different parts in the kit. Now, I doubt that is magically slid into place …but whatever the case, it looks like this:

Again, that assembly step was part of the instructions so /shrug. It’s one piece now and it was surprisingly hard to separate, too.

As for the cards I’m not sure they were online so here’s a good look at them:

Your load-out can vary. Oh and you get a full playset in the supported languages as well. That’s become a standard AMG thing at this point, too.

Now, let’s get into the build!

AAT Battle Tank Up Close

So as I mentioned before this is the first BIG vehicle I’ve built for Legion. I think it turned out pretty well! It wasn’t super hard to assemble either but unlike an infantry kit, I did have to look up instructions. There’s a lot of little bits and bobs around the kit that I just didn’t know where they went. Things like extra vents or sensors. Oh and random plates or piping. But if you’ve build any sort of model tank before this should be a breeze.

Here’s a look at the back of the kit and you can see the clear plastic “flight” stand. I found that bit later on and was really glad! Attaching it to the base made a lot more sense once I had that part. The underside also has a good bit of detail to paint also. Which is nice considering the rest of the ship is basically a whole bunch of blank panels.

I took a “silly” pose with the turret and guns to show that they can be positioned differently. Alternatively, you could just glue it all down. You do you.

That’s also true with the top hatch. I just glued it shut and left the crew member out. In my head, I don’t know why a droid would need to be a “spotter” out of the top…Aren’t they all, ya know, droids? I know they can communicate with each other but I figured they’d have instruments and be able to relay info back and forth without needing to have another droid pop out of the hatch and point. Based on how they fought in the movies, I assumed they had some limited networking abilities…

Anyhow, on to the underside!

I wanted to show off the panels and hatch for the underside here. I also wanted to show the placement of the flight stand on the base. I would recommend playing around with the placement before you glue it all down. If you’ve got a pen to mark where you want the base to go, that’s probably the best way to do that.

Overall, the AAT Battle Tank is a nice kit and I’m glad I got to build it. The hardest part about this entire build was that I knocked over my plastic glue and it spilled all over my hobby area. I had to run vents and fans all night to finally get the smell out. Don’t spill your plastic glue, folks. That has nothing to do with the actual build but it was the hardest part of my hobby time with this kit.

The AAT Battle Tank is out now and hopefully in stores near you!

Star Wars: Legion – AAT Battle Tank $69.99

This pack is a reissue of the previously released SWL64 AAT Trade Federation Battle Tank. This pack includes the same miniatures as SWL64 but updates the packaging and cards to the new SWQ multilingual format. This expansion for Star WarsTM: Legion contains 1 AAT Trade Federation Battle Tank miniature, enough for 1 Heavy unit, as well as unit and upgrade cards to support gameplay.

If only there were OTHER big kits to build for SWL… (There are. That’s a hint at what I’m reviewing next!)
