Red Sonja has cast its stars and begun principal photography – and to celebrate, they’ve given us our first look at the character’s look.
At last! Millennium Media has begun principal photography on the highly-anticipated (by me) adaptation of the famous Dynamite comics heroine Red Sonja. Shoots are currently taking place in Bulgaria, and will later take place in Greece.
While we wait, we have our first look at Revenge star Matilda Lutz sporting Sonja’s signature sword, armor, and fiery red hair.
Everything We Know About Red Sonja So Far
A project featuring the red warrior has been in the works for a while now. Originally Hannah John Kamen (Ant-Man & the Wasp, Ready Player One) was cast as the lead role, but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Now the project is moving forward with Matilda Lutz.
The series has also added Umbrella Academy‘s Robert Sheehan as Draygan. One potential villain for the series will come in the form of Sonja’s half-sister Annisia, who will be played by Batwoman star Wallis Day.
Other supporting cast members include Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El Feitury, and Katrina Durden.

The film’s director is M.J. Bassett, who’s best known for her work on Solomon Kane, and has also directed episodes of Ash vs. Evil Dead and Power. She sounds absolutely thrilled to be taking on the project, saying:
“I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager – she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja.”
The Red Sonja movie will be scripted by Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo. Sonja herself is the brainchild of Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, who created her for Marvel’s comic book Conan the Barbarian. She’s since been written and drawn by some comic book greats. One of her most iconic writers, Gail Simone, is serving as producer for the show.
