Total War: Warhammer 3 will see the launch of the Thrones of Decay expansion, but along with it, a new free update containing much more.

Total War: Warhammer 3 gets its first big update of the year in just a few days. With Thrones of Decay, there will be new Legendary Lords. The list includes Elspeth von Draken and her new Imperial Guns. Also, there’s Tamurkhan, the Maggot Lord, and his pestilent hordes of Nurgle. Finally, there’s Malakai Makaisson, who leads the Slayers and Doomseekers into battle.

But there’s a new free update coming along with it. Yes, Total War: Warhammer 3 gets one of its signature “FreeLCs” in the form of Patch 5.0, which introduces a new, free Legendary Lord, a new Hero, and the ominous Nemesis Crown.

Total War: Warhammer 3 – Patch 5.0, Thrones of Decay Free Update

First up, the new free Legendary Lord: Epidemius, Nurgle’s chosen Tallyman and one of the seven Protectors of Pestilence. His mechanic, the Tally of Pestilence system, counts the number of non-Nurgle armies and settlements affected by his plagues. The more plagues there are, the more power he unlocks. His plague cultists are faster, and he can recruit Plaguebearers and Exalted Plaguebearers at higher ranks.

In combat, Epidemius grows stronger with the Tally of Pestilence, can explode in a burst of plague, and can unleash the Sands of Sickness to debuff his foes.

There’s also a new free Hero, the Gold Wizard. A Gold Wizard is a powerful spellcaster, one who masters the Lore of Metal to devastate the battlefield. They can eventually be mounted on a warhorse or pegasus for even more mobility.

The new Gold Wizard also has two new items: the Armour of Tarnus, which grants a ward save and passively augments your spells, and the Gold Standard, which is an active augment that grants a single unit invulnerability. All powerful stuff.

But perhaps the most exciting thing is the new Campaign Feature, the Nemesis Crown:

The Nemesis Crown is a powerful artefact that can be discovered by any faction and increased in level to grant their leader and forces great strength, but at a cost. It appears throughout a campaign, providing hints of its location, and will be revealed once a faction owns a region in the province where it is concealed at the start of a turn.

Upon discovering the Crown’s location, a campaign marker will appear to fight a battle for the option to either keep the Crown and gain its power or seal it away to be discovered later elsewhere in the world.

Once attained, the Crown can be leveled up by winning a set number of battles. Its current and next level’s effects will be viewable in the panel accessed via the Nemesis Crown button at the top of the main campaign interface.

All this awaits in Throne of Decay, releasing April 30th!
