Roll20 and Discord announced that they would be teaming up to seamlessly integrate the virtual tabletop with the chat program.

Discord is everywhere, especially over the last four years. But even before then, Discord was already sort of the premiere way to coordinate your gaming chats, whether that was tabletop or video game. Discord’s VoIP integration meant you could hang out and chat with your friends while trying to get ten kills on the board, having just wiped out Tomato Town.

I mean, just stop and check. How many servers are you a part of at this very moment? That’s way too many servers. Trust me, I know.

Similarly, Roll20 is one of the virtual tabletops that’s at the forefront of the game. They’ve been around since the days of Google+ and are one of the more recognizable names in VTTs. Now, they’re about to be even more omnipresent thanks to a recent partnership with Discord.

Roll20 and Discord Unite for a One-Stop Shop

This is a huge get on Roll20’s part. Because it means you don’t have to go anywhere else to do Roll20. You’re already on Discord, as we talked about, and soon, it’ll be even easier to just do Roll20 from within it. In fact, you can try it out next week if you’re a Roll20 Pro subscriber during the exclusive beta test.

And it’s the whole enchilada. Per their announcement, you’ll get all the Roll20 bits you know and love:

You and your gaming group can summon a full-featured virtual tabletop complete with maps, tokens, character sheets, and all the Roll20 tools you know and love – and play within the Discord interface. The best part? You can keep using Discord’s voice and video chat while rolling dice, moving tokens, and traversing your campaign world together. No more juggling between apps and windows – just one seamless role-playing experience.

You’ll get all the maps, tokens, layers, etc. you need. All the integrated character sheets and compendiums, even 3d dice. And better still, you won’t have to repurchase anything. It’s just whatever you have, you can already do.

Let’s face it, you were already probably using Discord for voice/video anyway. I think I’ve been on exactly one game in the last eight years that used Roll20.com’s integrated voice and video feature. No longer will you have to do the “Which tab is Roll20 in?” dance.

Because it’ll be in Discord. Sadly, it’s not available on mobile devices yet, but presumably, that’s just a matter of time. In the meantime, this is a huge win for Roll20 and will likely set them up for the next several years at least.
