Games Workshop brought in some familiar faces to check out the new edition of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Here’s what they think.

In a video produced by Games Workshop, what sort of reactions about the new edition are you expecting? Pretty glowing reviews, right? Well…yeah! But at least the got the players to explain why they liked the new edition.

Quick, Brutal Gameplay

The new edition goes up for pre-order on June 29, 2024 with the new launch box. It makes sense that GW is showing off actual players and community veterans and their impressions of the new edition now. They are getting that hype train rolling. But what is there to be hyped about? A lot actually. We already touched on some of the big rules changes to the game you need to know about. Games Workshop has gone back to the drawing board with this edition and attempted to distill down the game rules once again. From the reactions of the people in the video, they’ve done it.

Another thing the players are really hyped about is the interactivity of the game now. There are loads of ways for the “non-active” player to react to things the active player is doing now. So you’re never just sitting there waiting to roll your armor saves while your opponent does all the cool things. I do like this aspect of the change to the new edition. But what I think what really makes this work is the way the turns and rules are laid out.

With everything being an ability now players know exactly when they can use those and in what order. It’s all color coded and also has the symbols, too. This really speeds things up as you can visually see on the warscrolls your options during the turn — by color or symbol!

Spearhead Is The Perfect Gateway Game

Games of Spearhead are fast and furious games thanks to the smaller board size. But it’s not just that — it’s also the army sizes, too. In this format your Spearhead armies are just one box (either Spearhead or Vanguard boxes) of miniatures. You don’t need to complete a full-sized army. You get the satisfaction of that “build, paint, play” cycle a lot faster within Spearhead as well. The folks in the video were certainly talking those aspects up about Spearhead as well.

Personally, I think this format is also really great for getting new players to try the game. There are less rules to learn but it still has tactical depth to the game. Simplified doesn’t mean easy to win. Spearhead still provides quite a challenge with the balanced army boxes. I really think this could be a tournament format by itself akin to a “Fighting Game” style setup. But aside from the competitive aspect Spearhead is a game mode that is the perfect demo of Age of Sigmar, too. It’s certainly more “snack size” than a “full meal” but that doesn’t mean it’s not satisfying.

Additionally, Spearhead still uses the main Core Rules. If you want to step up to full sized games it’s not that big of a leap. That’s why I think Spearhead is a fantastic gateway into Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. And from the video, I don’t think I’m alone in that belief.
