In all the Forgotten Realms, nobody commands as much fear or delight as the miniature giant space hamster known as Boo.

The Forgotten Realms were full of wondrous creatures and legendary heroes. But on rare occasions these two would be combined in one being. Often, these figures could shape whole eras of history.

The Platinum Dragon, Bahamut; the paranoid yet powerful Beholder, Xanathar. But all these don’t command half the reputation as the miniature giant space hamster known as Boo.

Boo was a storied figure in the Forgotten Realms. Animal companion to the Rashemi Ranger, Minsc, Boo has seen more than his fair share of adventure. He lived through the Time of Troubles, fought alongside a spawn of Bhaal, and was known, on occasion, to go for the eyes.

But who is this heroic hamster?

Boo – Origins of a Legend

Boo’s origins were shrouded in mystery. As a miniature giant space hamster, Boo, at some point, was captured and reduced in size by a wizard.

The magical transformation left Boo in a new hamster-like state. But not to be confused with the ordinary beasts, as a miniature giant space hamster, Boo possessed an uncanny intellect. Which is how he managed to escape his captors and wander the Realms until he came to the city of Baldur’s Gate. There, it is said, he met with the Ranger, Minsc, shortly after the Ranger sustained a head injury.

But the pair were inseparable. And their deeds became legends.

During the Bhaalspawn Crisis

Boo accompanied Minsc and his companions during the so-called Bhaalspawn crisis. During the events, the miniature giant space hamster would aid his Ranger in combat. He was best known for leaping at the faces of enemies, biting and clawing at the eyes.

Together, along with other heroes, they fought the murderous Saarevok, as well as the exiled wizard Jon Irenicus. And their adventures might have passed into legend there. If not for the durability of the stone.

Petrified in Baldur’s Gate

In 1409 DR, a statue of Minsc and Boo was unveiled in the merchant district of Baldur’s Gate. Unbeknownst to anyone, however, the statue was actually the real, flesh-and-blood duo.

They were just suffering the effects of a powerful petrification spell. Which persisted even during the vandalization of the statue in 1479 DR. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1480s that Minsc and Boo were hit with a burst of wild magic that returned them to life.

Upon their restoration, Boo immediately urged the pair toward heroism. Thus did they join thieves Krydle and Shandie in order to battle the Cult of the Dragon.

And so their legend continues even to this day.
