Kobold Press is heading back to its third-party publishing roots with something new for 2027: Dark Halls for Shadowdark RPG.
Our first 2027 Kickstarter campaign brings the monsters, player options, and bold creative design Kobold Press is known for to Shadowdark RPG. With two hard-cover books, a series of zines, striking black-and-white line art, and handy accessories, Dark Halls offers a new way to experience Kobold Press content in one of TTRPG’s best and most beloved fantasy games.
And yes, we’re bringing back a little of that classic Warlock aesthetic along the way.
A Kobold Take on Shadowdark
Kobold Press has spent years creating monsters, adventures, and game material for tabletop roleplaying games. With Dark Halls, we’re putting that experience to work in a new system, adapting our approach to Shadowdark’s fast-paced, streamlined style.
As Jeff Quick, Editor at Kobold Press, explains:
“Kobold has our own batch of modern, streamlined game material, so it was a gimme that we could cook it down to fit Shadowdark. But we didn’t just want to ape the good work Kelsey had already done, so we called ours Dark Halls. It’s not a different game at all, but it is a Kobold take on Shadowdark. We already love playing with it, and we hope you will too.”
The goal isn’t to create a new game. It’s to bring the Kobold Press design to Shadowdark while respecting what makes the original system work so well.
Familiar Monsters, New Options, and Classic Kobold Style

The project will feature contributions from a lineup of Kobold Press writers and designers, including Kelsey Dionne, designer of the Shadowdark RPG. It’s a chance to bring years of game design experience
