If your group has played through the Star Trek Adventures second edition Starter Set, you may be thinking about what comes next. How can you use the Starter Set to tell additional stories set in the Star Trek™ universe?

One option would be to pick up the second edition Game Toolkit and use that in conjunction with the Starter Set. The toolkit provides another set of reference cards to spread around the table so that every player has easy access to them; a large game screen presenting most of the key tables and rules for the game in one convenient package; a sheet of tokens for Momentum, Threat, and Determination; and a booklet containing additional rules options and a wealth of new spaceframes, mission profiles, and starship talents. The folded map included with the Game Toolkit can help generate ideas for places to explore on future missions and campaigns. It’s oriented to approximately 2259, so plan accordingly.

If you want to set your campaign on a different ship and in a different timeframe, you could pick from the selection of spaceframes in the Game Toolkit. Perhaps you and your crew like the Nebula class better than the Constitution class for the stories you want to create. Simply pick the Nebula and create statistics for your new ship.

Note that the Game Toolkit does not provide complete statistics for ships. You will need to adapt the mechanical elements of the spaceframes for use in your game, assuming you do not have a copy of the core rulebook. The additional mission profiles and starship talents in the Game Toolkit can likewise be adapted for use with the Starter Set.

Follow this brief guidance if you don’t yet have a core rulebook and want to use one of the spaceframes in the Game Toolkit with the Starter Set

  1. Select a spaceframe from pages 7–25.
  2. Select a mission profile from pages 26–28 or make up your own by using the provided mission profiles as examples and split 12 points among your ship’s six departments (minimum of 1, maximum of 5), and add 1 to any one system (max of 12 points in a system).
  3. Make your ship’s Resistance half its Scale +2 (a simplification from the standard second edition core rules).
  4. Make your ship’s Shields a rating equal to its Scale + Structure + Security.
  5. Talents and weapon damage are more involved than this blog post can cover; consider using the free online character and ship tool or your imagination to create reasonable talent descriptions and weapon damages until you grab a copy of the second edition core rulebook. Use the Challenger from the Starter Set as a baseline and adapt your ship accordingly.

The gamemaster rules options and advice on pages 31–39 of the Game Toolkit booklet tie into the rules presented in the Starter Set rules booklet, so you should be able to use them to plan and tell stories and enhance your game experience.

And finally, conveniently, all of the Game Toolkit contents fit into the Starter Set box (assuming you remove the dice, anyway!), meaning you can take all your Star Trek Adventures gaming content on the go.
