Games Workshop has something cooking for the Chaos Daemons. “Pretty much every unit in the index” has changed which is kind of a big deal!

That quote isn’t just me making stuff up. That’s coming directly from the Warhammer Community team. GW has been prepping us with some sort of changes for the Chaos Daemons when the Emperor’s Children launched. Now we’re seeing more changes ahead.

via Warhammer Community

” The Chaos Daemons have been updated across the board to more closely match the Datasheet rules found in Codex: Emperor’s Children, and in the forthcoming Death Guard, Thousand Sons and World Eaters Codexes.

This has resulted in a number of changes to stat lines and abilities to pretty much every unit in the Index.”

Chaos Daemons Index Update

We already touched (briefly) on the changes to the Chaos Daemons in from the March Balance Dataslate update. But this one cuts a lot deeper. Here’s a few highlights from WarCom:

  • Bloodthirsters, Skarbrand and Bloodcrushers all get a 3+ Armour Save
  • Daemonettes and Tranceweavers now have Fights First all the time
  • Great Unclean Ones now increase the Toughness of nearby Nurgle units
  • New abilities for Kairos Fateweaver
  • Be’lakor’s Datasheet has been overhauled

That’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Be’lakor also has the Shadow Legion Detachment which allows you to mix Daemons and Heretic Astartes together as well. It’s got additional bonuses based on the respective chaos god the units follow as well as if those followers are mortal or Daemon.

It sure seems like GW is queuing up for something else for the Daemons in the future. Because they dropped this part, too:

“Index: Chaos Daemons has been expanded to support some of the core narratives of collecting such an army and it will be where the rules for playing all of your daemons together exist. Index: Chaos Daemons will join Index: Deathwatch as a living online document usable in any game of Warhammer 40,000 – including at tournaments. We plan to continue to make updates and point changes to both forces as required.”

So yeah…it sounds like the Chaos Daemons are heading to a strange place. Their Index becoming a “living online document” is a strong signal that GW isn’t going to be creating a Codex for them anytime soon. They also pulled some of the datasheets out of the Index and move them over to Legends. The units that got pulled were because they weren’t in production.

While this doesn’t sound like the last hurrah for the Daemons something is up. I do wonder if this has to do with Chaos Daemons being the one army you could play in both 40k and AoS. Perhaps GW is looking to force Daemons to one system or the other eventually. For now, the 40k Chaos Daemons are still getting updated (at least via Index) so you can still play them. But do wonder what the plan is from GW.

Chaos Daemons never truly die. They just go to the warp and hang out for a while…
