If you’re a Dungeon Master or a player who frequently uses area-of-effect spells, you know the struggle of accurately visualizing those spell ranges.
In my opinion, the gold standard for spell effects are wire templates by Steel Sqwire, which make it easier to just plop a template over a battlemap, miniatures and all. This set aims to do something similar, and for the most part, it succeeds.
The variety is impressive. You get 16 templates in total, covering a wide range of spell shapes and sizes: lines, circles, cubes, and cones. This means you’ll likely have a template for just about any spell you need to cast. The semi-transparent acrylic material is a nice touch, allowing you to easily see the map underneath while still clearly defining the spell’s area. That said, some are more useful than others. The radius and cube templates easily fit around miniatures, the cone likely doesn’t, and the lines are one inch wide so you’ll likely be measuring distances on its side — but do you really need five of them vs. one long one with 10 ft. markings?
The templates are sturdy and feel well-made. They’re not flimsy, and they should hold up to regular use. The included PU leather pouch is a convenient way to store and transport the set, although it’s worth noting that it’s open at the top, so some pieces might slide out if you’re not careful. The included cleaning cloth is a nice bonus, as the template will likely get scuffed a lot.
That said, the templates are a bit pricey. Also, while the semi-transparent material is generally good, it can be a bit difficult to see the lines on very dark maps. Still, this is one the most versatile collection of area effect templates on the market, and worth the investment if you’ve got sorcerers in your party fond of laying down fireballs and burning hands like I do.
