The 1800-ish ice age survivor sim, Frostpunk is getting its very own tabletop RPG, coming soon from Catalyst Games.
If you’re at all familiar with the snowy survivor sim/rts game, Frostpunk, then you know already that it makes perfect sense that it’d get its own RPG. After all, the world is rich. There are plenty of catastrophes that need tending to. And it’s got the sort of narrative depth that you can really chew on in a campaign.
Next year, it seems, we’ll get to see exactly what that’s like. Catalyst Game Labs has launched a new Kickstarter for a Frostpunk tabletop RPG. Set in the same world as the game, it will cast players as members of a city, struggling to survive by keeping its massive heat generators running.
Alongside the RPG is a two-volume artbook and setting book that explores the world of both games.
Frostpunk The Tabletop RPG – Coming Next April From Catalyst Game Labs
What I find really interesting about this Kickstarter is that the RPG seems centered around building your society. It’s a similar premise to the game, but it gives a more personal experience of seeing what survival is like.
“You find yourself in the vast, unforgiving frostland, where the landscape is dominated by endless expanses of ice and towering, jagged, snowy mountains. The ground is a solid sheet of ice, cracked and treacherous, stretching out as far as the eye can see. Snow blankets everything in a thick, suffocating layer, obscuring landmarks and turning the world into a disorienting white maze. You will play a character and choose a job that helps contribute to the betterment of the city. Just like in the video game, you will have to make difficult decisions between morality and survival.”
To that end, you’ll use Catalyst Games’ new Dice Core system.
Described as a “medium-weight roleplaying” system, it’s supposed to be simple but meaningful. Having not played it, I can’t really speak to that, but here’s a look at the core system so you can judge for yourself:
“Tests in the Dice Core system are rolled with three dice: one connected to the complexity of the action being attempted, one connected to the Skill being used, and a third from a linked Attribute. These dice can be a d4, d6, d8, d10, or d12.”
It’s got enough of a bite that I want to see what the rest of the rules are like. The themes of Frostpunk, and the focus on Society as the goal and a sort of character all its own, make this one definitely worth checking out!
The snows await!
