Those Astarion wedding bells will have to wait—Wizards of the Coast has issued a DMCA, taking down the BG3 mod for Stardew Valley.
Baldur’s Village was a popular mod for Stardew Valley. It brought the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the farming and crafting life sim, mashing up two great games that conspire to relieve you of any free time you might happen to have lying around. At least it did until Wizards of the Coast issued a DMCA takedown for the popular mod.
As of March 29th, the mod was no longer available and is currently listed as “under moderation review.” This comes despite praise from Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, and popular support from both communities.
Wizards of the Coast DMCA’s Stardew Valley‘s BG3 Mod
As PC Gamer reports, WotC issued a DMCA takedown to mod hosting sight Nexusmods over Stardew Valley’s BG3 mod. According to a spokesperson, the news comes as something of a surprise, considering the mod’s endorsement by Baldur’s Gate 3‘s creators:
“This is an incredibly creative crossover to Stardew Valley that the community loves. [Swen Vincke’s] endorsement was nothing less than we would expect from the Larian CEO, who has been such a refreshing and visionary leader.”
It’s a puzzling move from WotC’s legal team. Perhaps it’s an issue of trying to protect the license. The Baldur’s Gate 3 characters have certainly been front and center of a lot of official D&D/WotC events lately. Astarion, in particular, is in the Monster Manual, and you can find the whole cast of Origin Characters in various D&D Live playthroughs.
Per PC Gamer, Nexusmods holds out hope that this is an oversight, stating that WotC may have used an external company as a sort of copyright watch dog, and they may eventually reverse the decision. Until such time, the mod is unavailable—and it may prove a headache for any future mod developers, including the Baldur’s Village team, who were planning more updates post-launch. Hopefully, if WotC reverses its decision, they’ll keep going.
In the meantime, we’ll hope a reversal crops up sooner, rather than later.
Corporations are gonna corporation.
