You ever what the inside of a godlike robot’s head would be like? Yeah me neither, but as it turns out we have an answer in Knowhere.

Space is many things: the final frontier, the last place uncorrupted by capitalism, a place where no one can hear you scream. And yet, despite all of these different takes, there’s a commonality to space. No matter the universe, space is full of big giant heads.

Whether you’re looking at Andross, the final boss in Starfox. Or Unicron from the Transformers movie. Even Third Rock from the Sun had its very own big giant head, fittingly called the Big Giant Head. Little wonder then, that there should be one in the Marvel universe.

In the MCU, their very own Big Giant Head is also a once-thriving ecosystem/black market-turned into HQ of the Guardians of the Galaxy, known as Knowhere. It is the head of a Celestial, one of Jack Kirby’s space god robots, who are both extremely cool (depending on which reality you dive into) and also impossibly powerful. So how did one head come to mean so much to so many?

Knowhere – They Built This City on Rock & Roll the Severed Head of a Celestial

While Knowhere had been stationary for aeons, the Guardians of the Galaxy gave it new purpose. Because they did what only the Guardians of the Galaxy could do when they find a cool space hang out—they strapped engines to it to see if it would work.

And work it did. Through careful engineering, the Guardians of the Galay turned the severed head/city into a massive, mobile base. Capable of crossing the galaxy at surprising speeds, Knowhere helped the Guardians intervene in 2026, when they fought the High Evolutionary.

Ever since then, Knowhere has served as a home to the various misfits of the Marvel galaxy. With repairs from the Guardians and their other cohorts, the mobile city has become a lot more home-y.

Knowhere – Getting A-Head

Knowhere was the head of a Celestial. Celestials, are incredibly powerful beings, who arose in the earliest days of the universe. At the dawn of creation, before even the Big Bang, awash in primordial chaos of the universe, arose the Celestials. The first, known as Arishem, the Prime Celestial, created the first sun and brought light into the universe.

Of course, not everyone was pleased about this. A being known as Knull—a creature of primordial darkness on par with the Celestials, waged an ultimately fruitless war with them. And before being defeated, Knull with a sword known as All-Black the Necrosword beheaded one of the Celestials in response to this invasion of despoiling light in the early darkness of the universe.

The rest is a very long history. But of far more interest to Knowhere was the mining colony located within it. Known as Exitar, this mining colony attracted all manner of scum and villainy. For hundreds of years, the Tivan Group had been mining Knowhere, harvesting precious organic matter, including Celestial bone, brain, and spinal fluid for the various bblack markets around the galaxy.

This trade drew many people of ill-repute to Knowhere in pursuit of profit. Though ultimately, it drew the Guardians of the Galaxy, who made it into the kind of place you’d want to live. And since then, it has drawn many famous guests. Including Kevin Bacon!

Kevin Bacon is a real Knowhere man!
