One day you’re fishing and catch a nice marlin, and the next you’re pulling up a large mass of eyeballs. Just another day of Deep Regrets.
Remember not too long ago when games like Dredge and Dave the Diver got hugely popular? Well, finally we’ve got the board game versions to play with. Thanks to the folks over at Tettix Games, now we can all be filled with Deep Regrets!
Deep Regrets Overview
In Deep Regrets, players are competing to have the best week of fishing. They’ll sail out each day, catch some “fish”, sell or eat them, or mount them as trophies. Along the way, they will head to port, buy new gear and items, and also allow their minds to be slowly shattered and torn asunder as they consider the nightmarish horrors they have witnessed in the unspeakable depths. You know, normal fishing stuff.
Players will start each day by rolling dice, which they will use to catch fish. The value of the dice rolled will determine which fish they can catch. Players can also spend a die to move into deeper waters, which will have bigger, nastier “fish”.
Players can sell fish for money, to use at the shop to buy better rods and other supplies. They can eat the fish for a one time benefit. Or they can mount the fish as a trophy, which is the main way players score points.
While not every fish is a foul monstrosity, many are. And each time a player reels in one such lunker, they draw a Regret card. As they gain more regrets, they edge closer to madness. But, as if often does, madness has many benefits. Higher levels of madness can grant additional points for foul fish, allow a player to have more dice ready at once, and might even allow the player to steal some items from the shop.
But, sadly, with madness, it’s not all fun and games. The player with the most madness at the end of the game will lose their most valuable fish, so careful going even one step beyond with that whole madness stuff.
But, there’s also a solo mode! A single player can go on a legacy-style campaign to catch every fish in the sea! As they catch more fish, they will unlock more and better equipment to use on future excursions. And once they have caught and brought to shore every fish in the sea, they can officially declare themselves lord of the ocean! Or whatever else they want.
