Skyfall is a whole new campaign setting for D&D, finding its way to an international audience for the first time, Kickstarting now.
Skyfall was popular D&D setting/campaign originally published in Portuguese in Brazil. There, it was a major hit, with more than 1,800 backers raising more than 500K Brazilian Real (close to $100k USD). Which was a major hit for publisher CapyCat games. Now, the Aetherpunk and “Tragic Fantasy” world is set to come to an international audience, with a new Kickstarter for an updated campaign setting and hexcrawl campaign.
Skyfall – D&D With a Dash of Tragedy and Magithec
So what is Skyfall, exactly? And what’s all this about tragic fantasy? As you might infer from the artwork and some of the copy from the Kickstarter campaign, this is a world that is destined to end. Or so they say. The world of Opath is one where floating islands fall from the sky and crash with cataclysmic impact. But of course, there are magical resources to be found in the floating islands which gives rise to the setting’s “aetherpunk” aesthetic.
Magic and technology combine in a convenient new way to introduce new subclasses and a even a whole new class. There are also new species that you can play. You’ll find all sorts of new wrinkles to add to your D&D games with the addition of magitech.
What interests me is the “sandbox” of the setting. You’ll find a list of different regions that are suited for a hexcrawl type campaign. The lore of the setting sets itself up for this. Amid the skyfall, you go out and recover aetherium from the dangerous wilds and if you make it back, fortune and glory are yours to be had as you lather, rinse, and repeat, maybe even saving the world along the way.
“Set in the richly imagined continent of Opath, Skyfall RPG introduces players to a shattered world forever changed by the cataclysmic Skyfalls — massive islands that plummet from the sky, reshaping the land and tearing apart lives. Amidst this destruction, a mysterious and arcane resource known as Aetherium fuels both wonder and war, powering intricate magitech innovations in a world teetering on the edge of annihilation.
Nonetheless, from these skyborne catastrophes, hope arises in the form of Aetherium: a rare and volatile mineral, pulsing with arcane power. Those brave — or desperate — enough to harvest it give rise to the wonders of Aetherpunk: a fusion of sorcery and invention, where engines hum with magic and impossible machines reshape the world.”
Here’s a taste of what you can expect from the campaign:
- Path of the Augmentation Barbarian: Those who follow the path of augmentation embrace improving their might through magical or magitech enhancements and body modifications, to become the ultimate, unstoppable force in the battlefield.
- Blustereer Fighter: More than skilled sharpshooters, Blustereers wield Bluster Weapons with such deliberate, fine-tuned precision that they can adapt to any threat through a combination of their combat prowess and engineered ingenuity.
- Tinkerer Rogue: When it comes to magitech items, Tinkerers forego academic, structured learning for a more hands-on approach. They embrace the chaos of discovery, developing new and exciting magitech combinations on-the-go, pushing the limits of what their tinkering can do.
- Blustermage Wizard: Blustermages combine their arcane capabilities with the wondrous innovations provided by magitech and the powerful precision of the Bluster Weapons, making them arcane marvels and a force to be reckoned with.
And if you follow the link below, you can even find a free rules preview, so you can see if this is the sort of campaign for your table.
