Owlcat Studios, makers of Rogue Trader announced a new video game RPG: Dark Heresy. No word yet on an all Guardsman party.
It is the games showcase for Warhammer, and what a feast it’s turning out to be. Just a short while ago, Owlcat Studios, makers of Rogue Trader and Pathfinder: Kingmaker announced a new title on the way, Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy. And the hype is real. Because Dark Heresy is one of those beloved tabletop RPGs that inspired a million stories.
If you ever played it, you probably have your own tale of woe. Of just unmitigated disaster turned into the unlikeliest victories. The 40K galaxy is a dark, unforgiving place. Ripef or a cRPG – especially if Owlcat can work some of the kinks out from the Rogue Trader combat.
Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy Announced – Coming “Soon”
It is still early days, for the game. You can see the familiar engine at work in the trailer, so Rogue Trader as a base comparison is a good jumping-off point. But, Owlcat has its sights set higher with this one. For this venture into the 40K world, the developers want to focus on “deep reactivity.”
In other words, your choices will have consequences. We got to see some of that in Rogue Trader, but I think with a focus on that from development onwards, Dark Heresy could take the various ends of how you can be in the grim darkness of the distant future to some pretty fun extremes. Already it sounds like they have the “stay true to the letter of the Inquisition vs. the spirit of the Inquisition” dichotomy at play. But, will you be able to commit heresy? A dark one, even? Emperor protect.
As you might expect, if you’re familiar with the ttrpg, in Dark Heresy, you’ll play as a member of the Inquisition. In fact, you’ll play an Inquisitor and also the retinue you attract from the furthest reaches of the Calixis sector. Here’s a look at the announcement:
“By the decree of the Holy Inquisition, you have been chosen for a perilous mission that will dictate the future of the Calixis Sector. Become an agent of the Holy Golden Throne and hunt down all those who would dare stray from the Emperor’s light. Hold fast to your duty, eradicate the enemies of the Imperium and battle the horrors of the void in the long-anticipated Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy!

Alongside the announcement, Owlcat has teased a few of the companions you can recruit for your Inquisitorial retinue. You saw the Ogryn in the trailer. There’s also a Catachan Veteran (who will probably take care of most everything), and a Kroot Mercenary. Each companion has fully voiced dialogues because how else are you going to fall in love with these little weirdoes and heretics that follow you around?
No word on a release date yet, outside of the infamous “Coming Soon.” But hey, it’s early days. Just watch this space. And keep an eye out for a demo too.
