Creator-Owned Comic by ‘Conan’ Writer and ‘Street Fighter’ Artist Is ‘Deadpool by Way of D&D’
Oni Press has announced Skullkickers: Compact Attack Editions, collecting the 34-issue series by Conan writer Jim Zub and Street Fighter artist Edwin Huang into three digest-sized (5.5” x 8.5”) volumes slated for release in Spring 2026. The series, a humorous take on the sword & sorcery genre, was first released by Image Comics in 2010 (see “Another ‘Uncanny’ Comic”) and ran for five years. The digests were crowdfunded on Zoop, where they pulled in $9,387 from 110 backers. Each volume contains 11 issues, and Oni Press will release Vol. 1 on February 18, 2026, Vol. 2 on March 18, and Vol. 3 on April 22. MSRP was not announced.
“When Skullkickers was originally published in 2010, fantasy comics and D&D culture were a glimmer compared to the glittering pop culture explosion we’ve seen since then and we were 6 years from Deadpool’s fourth wall-breaking antics on the big screen,” Zub said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Skullkickers was “Deadpool by way of D&D” before that was even a thing. Skullkickers knew that sword & sorcery storytelling was amazing and ridiculous, because it’s always been amazing and ridiculous.”
Oni Press is also publishing Rick & Morty in a compact edition (see “Oni Press Adapts ‘Compact Comics’ Format for ‘Rick & Morty’”).
