Take a look at what other books we might be getting for Warhammer: The Old World in 2025.

It’s a busy time for Warhammer: The Old World and it’s fans. This weekend see Wood Elves released as well as Beastmen going up for pre-order. We also know that Grand Cathay is coming sometime this year. That’s five armies in one year, which is a lot, as many as we got all of last year! However four of them will be out in the first half of the year. All this leaves us wondering what might be coming out later this year, and are we getting more things? So today lets take a look at some of the options.

Just When Is Grand Cathay Coming

After Beastmen the next, and only other, announced army to be coming is Grand Cathay. However we don’t know when they will arrive. However we can make some guesses. GW normally doesn’t announce things all that far in advance, a few months at most. This is extra true when they show off a ton of, or possible all of, an army with the announcement. The amount they’ve shown of Cathay implies it’s ready to go. We can be pretty sure they are coming this year. Given that they were announced in March and how fast GW has been putting out armies, I think we can make a good guess that they will be by the end of August, and more likely sooner. If this is true, we’ll have gotten 5 armies in 7-8 months and likely have another 4-5 months to get something else out.

How  Much  More  Could  We  Get?

So could we still get more stuff by the end of the year? And the answer is obviously, yes! In fact if they keep this pace we could get another 3-4 books out by the end of the year. I doubt this will happen, but a man can dream right? Instead I think we are more likely to see two more books come out. Peppered in there I wouldn’t be shocked if we got a few more waves of releases for the armies that are already out. However we all should expect a slow down in model releases. The core armies that had big model ranges are out now, or soon will be, and that means most of the stuff to come out from here on out will be new.

What Books Might We See?

We have to guess at what might come, but GW has given us a couple of very tiny hints in the recent Wood Elf article.

There are two very interesting things in this quote. The most obvious, which a lot of people clocked, is that there at least one more Arcane Journal after Grand Cathay that is planned and supposedly interesting. Now this isn’t really shocking to most of us. And they have talked a lot  lately about how they like the Arcane Journal system. However it’s the first part of the quote which is more interesting to me.

So far all the Arcane Journals have focused on a single army that is releasing and expanding it. Each army has gotten one. However this quote, about Woodland Spirts of Wardancers getting an Army of Infamy in a future Arcane Journal is really cool. This implies we will see even more Armies of Infamy for the core factions and that future Arcane Journals will add to the armies even more. This is really cool and opens up a lot of ground with the Journals to be about a campaign and not just an army.

The Big Options

So thanks to that tease we can guess there is a good chance we will get another Arcane Journal this year, and there are really two types it could fall into. The first one is for a new army, much like the existing ones. The options here are really either to bring in one of the Legends Armies or add Kislev. If I had to bet, I’d put my money on Kislev. It’s more tied to the story and they teased it at the start of Old World, much like Cathay, and it would be a brand new army. As for Legends as much as we might want them GW has said they aren’t happening. Of course they said the same thing about Kislev and Cathay at the start of this year and we know that was a lie, at least in regards to Cathay.

The other option we might get is a campaign Arcane Journal focusing on some events that brings in several armies. This would be really cool as it might move the story forward and add even more to the armies we have (more Armies of Infamy plz). It could be focused on the Border Princes and Settra. It might also focus on Beastmen who have featured in a lot of the Journal missions, or maybe on the rise of Chaos in the north. All of these are ripe for exploration. This would also be a good way to add in more missions and even narrative play stuff. My real hope of course is that we will get both this year, Kislev and a campaign book. But time will tell!

Let us know what books you want to see this year, down in the comments!

Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers 40K tactics and lore, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe remains in mourning over the loss of WFB to this day.
