Games Workshop is moving through the codexes in Warhammer 40,000 and most have a codex for the current edition. But who’s left?

Now that the Chaos Knights are out and the Imperial Knights lost the keys to their new Knight Defender, we now have a good idea what’s coming from GW. Let’s do a quick check in to see which armies still need a codex at this point.

Road Map Check-In

This Road Map was from AdeptiCon 2025. And since then we’ve seen all the Chaos Space Marine books launch. We’ve also seen the Space Wolves get their Army Set launch (which technically included a codex). That said, the Space Wolves still haven’t gotten their full release yet.

Additionally, since the road map was released, we’ve also gotten the Chaos Knights (as mentioned above). And now we know the Imperial Knights are getting moved to later this year.

Codexes Coming Next?

Games Workshop has already started to hint that the Black Templars are next. We’ve gotten a look at their new Crusade Ancient coming with their Codex Supplement.

From there, we know the Grey Knights were going to follow afterwards because GW also teased them at AdeptiCon, too.

Codexes On The Horizon

So where does that leave us? Well, GW left us with the not-so subtle teasers for what’s after the confirmed lists:

This image is pointing to three more armies getting updates:

  • Salamanders
  • Leagues of Votann
  • Imperial Fists

What’s interesting is when you compare that list with the armies that still have Indexes available on GW’s rules website:

  • Imperial Knights
  • Leagues of Votann
  • Chaos Daemons
  • Drukhari
  • Space Wolves
  • Grey Knights
  • Chaos Knights
  • Death Guard
  • World Eaters
  • Black Templar
  • Thousand Sons
  • Emperor’s Children

So there’s quite a few Indexes that are still available even though their codexes are out. If we take out the armies that are accounted for and the ones we know aren’t getting a codex (Chaos Daemons) we have a very different list:

Now, isn’t that interesting? Also notice that the Salamanders and Imperial Fists are also teased but they don’t have indexes either. Technically, you can build them from the Space Marine Codex. That’s another topic though. GW also did a hold over for everyone this past Christmas with the Grotmas Detachments which are all still valid.

Anyhow, the point is that the Drukhari are really the only army that’s got an Index still but we’ve gotten zero signs that they are getting a new codex from the road map. We’re probably going to see the Leagues of Votann, two Space Marine supplements, and the Imperial Knight codex come out before they Drukhari get their day in the sun.

Does anyone else find all these overlapping Indexes, Army Sets, and Codex releases confusing?
