Games Workshop is looking to support the Horus Heresy for the long haul and the Journal Tactica are a major part of the support.
As the up coming new edition of The Horus Heresy draws ever closer I’ve been wondering how GW was planning to the ball rolling. The previous editions have already done a bang-up job with all the various model releases. And naturally there’s going to be more Forge World characters released over time, too. But what are the average players supposed to buy consistently from GW? There aren’t going to be individual codexes for the Legions thanks to the Liber books — they have basically all the rules for their respective factions. But it turns out GW does have a plan.
The third edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness isn’t just a new set of core rules and army lists. It also brings a new way of exploring the setting via a series of ongoing gaming supplements – the Journal Tactica.
Horus Heresy Journal Tactica
GW is planning a whole new host of Journal Tactica books to roll out over time. These 48-page softback books will give players more ways to experience the Horus Heresy.
“Future journals will cover many different subjects, the most obvious being the many iconic campaigns fought throughout the Horus Heresy, providing background, missions, playmodes and even special or variant units inspired by the stories. “
That right, if you’re looking for new missions or unit rules that’s what these Journal Tactica will provide. They’ll also have loads of lore and background for the respective campaigns the Journals will cover, too.
The first book will cover the Drop Site Massacre. But that’s just the tip of the spear. As more books roll out there will be other important battles you can recreate with these books.
“We have a bunch of other styles and mission packs up our sleeves which will be appearing in future journals, some familiar to veteran players, others entirely new.”
As mentioned there will be various rules added to the game via these books, too. The first book will have more info on the forces you can find in the Saturnine box and will also have two Legion-unique variations of the new Saturnine Terminators.
You’ll still want to get your respective Liber book for the core rules for your Legion or faction. Theses are not just replacements to the Liber books. But these Journal Tactica books are going to be fun supplements to use. While it’s going to be tempting to just buy them all you don’t have to. Pick up the ones that interest you the most!
I like the fact that these books are going to be supplements. That allows them to be a years-long thing from GW. Think of the Journal Tacticas as expansions for The Horus Heresy. I’m curious to see where they take the game in the long run.
So that’s how GW is planning on pumping out more content for the Horus Heresy over time!
