This massive LEGO Imperial Star Destroyer includes thousands of pieces and a fully detailed interior.
The Star Destroyer is possibly the most iconic ship in all of Star Wars. It’s the second ship to show up on screen in A New Hope and as such was the second ship audiences saw. It left a massive impression and became instantly iconic. In universe they helped forged an Empire. These vast ships travel between the stars and helped bring the galaxy to heel.
A symbol of the Emperor’s reach, an Imperial Star Destroyer brings the Empire wherever it goes. The Star Destroyer is as heavy as it gets when it comes to capital ships. You could call it the workhorse of the Imperial Fleet, but it does so much more than work. With crews in the tens of thousands they were designed to be able to conquer a planet on their own. They are the most iconic symbol of Imperial might and a stable of shows and movies.

LEGO Star Destroyer
Today we are taking a look at an amazing LEGO build of an Imperial Star Destroyer. The builder, Matt Benner, also made an amazing MC80A Mon Calamari Cruiser which we covered here. You can find him on social media here and here. He’s incredibly talented.
Matt has done several other Star Wars builds as well. However I think this Star Destroyer is his best. He’s gone ahead with an Imperial II Class Destroyer, called the ISD Tyrant. This is actually the ship that hit by the Rebel Ion cannon during the Battle of Hoth in Empire Strikes Back. So it’s btoh a cannon and a well known ship. Just look at it compared to an official LEGO Star Destroyer set.
The build contains around 35,000 pieces, almost one for each of the 37,000 crew! While the whole ship looks super impressive, it’s really the inside that stands out (or stands in?). This baby comes apart to show off a fully detailed interior with tons of nods to Star Wars lore and events. It’s hanger bay has three ships that can launch (a pair of TIE Interceptors and a Sentinel-Class landing craft). It’s also full of mini figs.
Inside you’ve got all the things a real Star Destroyer would need. Command rooms, evil Imperials scheming, support sections and more. You can find a number of vignettes scattered around. The way the whole thing comes apart, and then fits back together is really stunning and well thought out. Just steller work,
You can check out a full breakdown of the ship in this video.

Here are a few more of my favorite details on the ship. I really do love the bridge shot. And yes, before you ask, of course it’s part of a whole fleet.

Start Your Own Imperial Fleet
While you can’t walk into a store and buy the ISD Tyrant, it is pretty easy to get your own Star Destroyer. LEGO’s made several sets over the years and the latest one is pretty cool. This ship also comes apart to show off a detailed (if less and smaller) interior that you can play around with. Overall its a really cool looking take on the classic ship.

Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers Warhammer: The Old World, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe mourned over loss of WFB for its entire hiatus, but has been reborn like a gaming phoenix with Warhammer: The Old World.
