That’s right, folks, Mutants & Masterminds 4th Edition has been officially announced as of late last night by designer Steve Kenson.
Exactly what it says on the tin, here folks. Last night, OG Mutants & Masterminds developer Steve Kenson announced on Bluesky that a 4th Edition of the legendary superhero RPG was in the works. And that a special playtest edition is just around the corner for Gen Con. Big news considering that Mutants & Masterminds has been running in its 3rd Edition since 2011.
Mutants & Masterminds 4th Edition In The Works – Playtest Coming To Gen Con
If you’ve never played it, Mutants & Masterminds is a Superhero RPG developed using the d20 system. It’s one of the few vestiges of the old 3.x days that’s still around – though under the d20 system mechanics, Mutants & Masterminds is very much its own particular beast.
Perhaps best known for its high-action combat and superheroes cobbled together from customizable powers, Mutants & Masterminds eschews classes and things like “attack of opportunity.” Instead, focusing on the important stuff – that is, how does your character do the superheroic things they do. I’m very curious to see how the game carries this idea through to the next edition.
But we won’t have long to wait. At least to get an idea on how it’ll play. According to Kenson’s announcement on Bluesky, a special playtest edition is releasing at the end of July:
“The word is OUT #TTRPG! I can finally say that I’ve been working on a fourth edition of Mutants & Masterminds and that an “Origin” playtest edition is releasingin PDF and a limited print run at the end of the month for Gen Con! Stay tuned to greenroninpub.bsky.social and to M&M Monday for more!”
And of course, Green Ronin, original publishers of Mutants & Masterminds seems to be publishing the new edition as well. We can expect to find out more information this coming Monday, and then again at this year’s Gen Con. Looks like it’s going to be a doozy, folks!
Excited to see a new edition for one of the all-time great Superhero RPGs!
