The Horus Heresy is getting a new edition. Want to get caught up on the changes and learn to play? Games Workshop has you covered.

We’ve been covering The Horus Heresy updates for what feels like all Summer. This weekend we’re finally seeing Age of Darkness: Saturnine come to Pre-order which means the new edition is almost here. With that in mind there’s a lot going on with all these changes. Sure, if you’re a seasoned Heresy vet you’ll pick it all up eventually. But why not get a head start? Games Workshop has a new ~15 minute video you can watch to help you learn the basics of how to play Horus Heresy.

“The new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy is available to pre-order on Saturday. Inside the huge new Saturnine boxed set, you’ll find a quick guide on how to get started playing alongside the expansive official rulebook. But if you want to get a head start on the new system, look no further than this Learn to Play video.”

Learn To Play The Horus Heresy

The video itself is split-up into various sections. I do kind of wish the GW team marked the chapters in the video and that’s really my only (minor) gripe. It’s well produced and informative — as you’d expect from the Warhammer team. Naturally, they show off tons of expertly painted miniatures in the video, too.

The Rules Coverage in the video is also well done. This feels like a demo — which is kind of expected. It’s aimed at people learning to play who might not have years of experience with the systems or setting.

That’s not to say veterans won’t learn from this video. There are rules shifts in the new edition. Things like Advanced Characteristics, Challenges, Tactical Statuses, and even how you build your army are changing. So are the missions. These are all things that players will need to time to adjust to in the new edition.

The Horus Heresy – The Past Is The Future

I’ve even had my thoughts on the changes and why. Ultimately, the why matters little because the new edition is coming. Personally, I think these are big core changes to the game that GW wanted to make for the future. They are redoing the foundation so they can build more on top. And we know more is coming. I’m also curious to see what else they produce for the game miniature wise. It’s not like they can’t just create brand new models out of thin air…

ANYHOW, I firmly believe the launch of a new edition is always a good time to jump in as a new or veteran player. Why? Because everyone is learning together. It’s a fun time of exploring the rules and learning the nuances. It helps a lot to bring folks together and sort through how things work. While videos like the one above are helpful, nothing beats actually playing the game for yourself.

Are you ready for the next edition of the Horus Heresy?
