D&D has a lot of spells that are auras now. So, whether you want to do some aura farming or aura harming, here are some good ones.

One of the categories of spells that got a big boost in 5.5E is the humble aura spell. Classified as an “emanation” these are spells that radiate outward from the caster and have continuous effects. Many of the effects have been reworded to do damage more often or be more potent. So with all that in mind, here are some great aura spells that will help you farm aura while you cast a harm aura.

Spirit Guardians

Let’s pull out the big guns, right away. This is probably one of the go-to aura spells in the game. For a few different reasons, too. For one, it’s got a huge aura, radiating out to within 15 feet of you. And two, it hits pretty often. It can potentially deal its damage whenever you cause the aura to enter an enemy’s space, and then again whenever a creatuure either enters the space on its turn or ends its turn there. You can deal this damage once per turn (not once per round, so there’s a lot of off-turn movement shenanigans to be had).

It deals 3d8 damage and it halves the speed of any creature within it, except for creatures you specifically designate as safe.

Circle of Power

Of course, not every spell is about dealing damage in an aura. Some aura spells in D&D are all about giving all your good friends a buff. And Circle of Power will give you an extraordinarily attractive aura—while within your 30 foot radius majestic aura, any of your allies (and you) have advantage on saving throws vs. spells and any other magical effects. Easy. Straightforward. But very good to have when you need it.

Conjure Minor Elementals

Conjure Woodland Beings is another example of how juiced up aura spells have gotten. Unlike the other aura spells, this one boosts your own damage. It’s especially good on a character that can make multiple attacks, because it lets you do 2d8 extra damage on every hit to an enemy within your 15 foot aura. That adds up real quick.

Yolande’s Regal Presence

When the Stand user could be anyone, this spell will help you announce yourself. You cast an aura of majesty out to ten feet in every direction. Whenever a creature enters the space of another creature, or whenever a creature enters your aura or starts its turn there, you not only can deal damage to them (4d6 psychic), you also get to knock them prone and can push them up to 10 feet away. So not only do they grovel at your feet, but then they’re thrown on their backs. Powerful stuff.

Speak With Plants

Perhaps the most powerful aura spell in D&D, though, is Speak with Plants. Because this lets you talk to any plant in a 30 foot radius of yourself. And this has the power to bring whole sessions screeching to a half as your DM embodies whatever random plants happen to be nearby. And it’s not just sentience and the ability to talk to you, they have limited animation too, so you can really get into it.
