Eldritch Horror and D&D are two great tastes that taste great together, and Cthulhu by Torchlight (now on D&D Beyond) blends them well.
Fantasy and horror have always gone hand in hand. Since the early days of the genre, when HP Lovecraft would dream up awful things lurking in the abyss, and then Robert Howard would write about how his cool Barbarian OC would kill them. And that holds true even in RPGs.
Call of Cthulhu is very much a game about facing the horrors of the unknown and finding darkness within and without. While D&D is very much a game about your magical hero being able to conquer all who stand in their way. Put ’em together and you’ve got a satisfying recipe for slaying shoggoths, as Cthulhu by Torchlight, now on D&D Beyond, illustrates.
Cthulhu by Torchlight on D&D Beyond – Smite Eldritch Horror
And it is everything you’d expect out of a Call of Cthulhu but in 5E kind of book. There are new subclasses for each class, including the Cleric of the Apocalypse, Warlock of the Exalted Assembly of the Feline Court, the Monk of Cosmic Balance, and more. But then beyond that, there are two dozen new spells, each with a mythos sort of inspiration. And new feats, and of course, plenty of new monsters.
Of course, monsters means stats. And as we all know, if it has stats, you can kill it. Which means you can take on Shoggoths, Ythians, or even Mythos deities like Dagon – all appear in the book. Of course, you might not survive the encounter (but it being D&D you probably will if you’re of a high enough level).
Of course, that’s the other thing here, you’ll find rules for making your games of D&D a little more horror-filled and exciting. It’s fantasy horror and that means cool monsters and action sequences. To that end, Chaosium – who has worked this book up as an exclusive for D&D Beyond – has put in rules for skill challenges too. Make your games dynamic and exciting.
“The Cthulhu Mythos invades fifth edition DUNGEONS & DRAGONS! Cthulhu by Torchlight brings deep ones, dimensional shamblers, and even Great Cthulhu himself to your campaigns. But your players will be ready for this invasion with subclasses, feats, and spells powerful enough to stop even the hungriest shoggoth. Cthulhu by Torchlight is ready to unleash cosmic horror on your campaign.
Cthulhu by Torchlight includes everything you need to run an adventure inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos or make them a foundation of an entire campaign. New monsters cover the full range of CRs, giving DMs options to run Mythos adventures at any levels. Rules for skill challenges make investigation, interaction, and exploration as important as combat. Everything DMs and players need to explore the Cthulhu Mythos is here in one volume.”
