Let’s look at the Top 5 Grey Knight Detachment combos to pump up your psychic warriors on the 40K tabletop.
The new Grey Knight Codex is full of interesting new enhancements to power up your super heroes for your army. They grant new powers and abilities that can help fortify you army or open up a whole new way to play. Let’s look at the top 5 from amongst the Detachments available in the book and see which are the best to help your psychic warriors on the battlefield. These are in no particular order more so just looking at the enhancements and see what feels like a winning combination. It is always interesting to see some options that let you figure out a whole new way to play the army.
Dreadknight Purifying Aura
Detachment – Brotherhood Strike
Enhancement – Banishing Wave
Datasheet – Greyknight Grandmaster in Dreadknight Armor
A Grey Knights model can have this item that whenever the bearer unit deepstrikes all units within 12″ you roll a d6. A 2-5 causes a mortal wound with a 6 rolled causes d3 mortal wounds. This could be an interesting way to ping small piles of mortal wounds off of a Dreadknight chassis as the base is so huge. It is also something that can start doing damage turn 2 and just continue to be a pain in the butt.
Grandmaster’s Two-step
Detachment – Sanctic Spearhead
Enhancement – Sigil of Exigence
Datasheet – Grey Knight Grandmaster
This is a remake of the old – if you shoot me I can teleport my model away upgrade from past Grey Knight codexes. It is always a useful ability to throw on a Grandmaster in Dreadknight armor or even a Greatknight Grandmaster attached to some Paladins. The model can be placed in precarious locations, force your opponent to move out to deal with them, and then hop away to redeploy in a safe zone. It was always a powerful ability before and still powerful in todays game.
Librarian Sniper ZZzap!
Detachment – Banishers
Enhancement – Pyresoul (Psychic)
Datasheet – Grey Knight Brotherhood Librarian
The Grey Knights lost the Librarian ability to do some out of shooting phase targeted mortals but this upgrades lets the model gain a weakened version of it. Now the model can target a visible model within 24″ and cause d3 mortal wounds on top of any other shooting the model has. This could be really useful as it appears to get around some of the targeting issues you could have and at 24″ it is a very long range to put some extra wounds on something.
Brotherhood’s Heroic Overwatch
Detachment – Hallowed Conclave
Enhancement – Eye of Augrium
Datasheet – Grey Knight Brotherhood Champion
This gives the Grey Knight Model and unit they are attached to the once per battle round ability to use either the Fire Overwatch or Heroic Intervention Stratagem for 0 CP. You even get to double up on either one which seems pretty powerful in the right unit options. A Paladin unit with Incinerators and attached Grandmaster could be very scary as they can easily stack some of the other CP discounts and use these abilities for free.
Brotherhood Bunny-hop
Detachment – Augurium Task Force
Enhancement – One Foot in the Future
Datasheet – Grey Knight Brotherhood Champion
This allows a Grey Knight character and unit attached to get a free d6 move after setting up in the reinforcement step. It is not limited to once per game as well so getting a free move after showing up seems pretty good. You cannot charge after setting up but you could show up, move, and then get some shots you might not have had or get in range with some other fun abilities.
There are a lot of interesting tricks in the codex with things like reroll 1’s to hit and other fun options. They even gave the old Draigo Ability to an enhancement so you could still use the old Space Dust addicted model in your games. I think the Grey Knights are in an interesting spot and depending on how the Meta settles and shifts whenever we get an update could see if the silver warriors will show up more often on the tabletop.
