More big news from Indianapolis this past weekend, including a new Zelda-inspired RPG, Twilight Sword, Masks 2E, and more!
More big news out of Gen Con this past weekend! Free League announced a Legend of Zelda inspired tabletop RPG, Twilight Sword, Magpie announced a new Temeraire RPG based on the series that starts with His Majesty’s Dragon, as well as a new edition of Masks, and Evil Hat announced an RPG based on the Green Bone Saga, Streets of Jade. And Cyberpunk from R. Talsorian Games has a ton of new stuff, including a new 2077 Campaign book developed with CD Projekt Red. So whether you’re looking for something old, something new, something borrowed (from another IP) or something new again, it’ll be coming before too long.
Twilight Sword – A Zelda-Inspired RPG From Free League and Two Little Mice
Free League’s big new Gen Con announcement was Twilight Sword, a new tabletop RPG being developed in collaboration with Two Little Mice. You might know Two Little Mice from the action-cinema RPG Outgunned, which recently released a pulp adventures expansion. But now, the studios have set their sights on a world called Radia.
The name, the font, the artwork, all of it wears its influence heavily on its sleeve. I mean just take a look. But that’s exactly what the people want. I mean, since probably the first Legend of Zelda game, people have been clamoring for a Legend of Zelda RPG. And why not? Dungeons, hook shots, weird hand guys that grab you and traumatize you for life, music that just won’t leave your head no matter how hard you try—it’s good stuff.
And Twilight Sword looks to give you that with a world known as Radia. You’ll explore Landmarks and defeat bosses to gather hope and save the world. And, as you can see in a preview of the setting (no details on the system, yet) you can be all sorts of little or big weirdos, including Huma (like humans but with pointy ears), Kedi (like humans but they’re small cats), Pengu (like humans but they’re big beefy penguins), Strix (like humans but they’re owls), and Toluna (not featured in the artwork).
Still no word on how the game itself will play. Though the developers hope to have a focus on exploration as well as boss battles. If they can nail down that aspect, that’ll be great. Exploration is hard to systematize, though. But who doesn’t love a challenge?
Magpie’s Masks 2E And Temeraire RPG
Meanwhile, over in Magpie Games territory, the Avatar: Legends publisher announced a whole slew of new RPG titles, starting with Masks: A New Generation, 2nd Edition. This is an updated version of the original game of teen superheroes—with all the angst and coming of age you’ve come to know and love about the original. You can find new art and new lore as well! Look for a crowdfunding campaign in 2026 along with a new quickstart ruleset.
Magpie also announced a partnership with Naomi Novik to bring the world of the Temeraire book series to life on the tabletop. Temeraire: The Roleplaying Game will be set in an alternate Napoleonic wars timeline, where you’ll play as both human and dragon characters. This game will use Magpie’s new Aedana System, which you can see in action in the Fallen London RPG Quickstart set.
And as a nice little bonus for spooky season, in October, you can expect to see three “card-based horror RPGs” come to Kickstarter. I don’t know exactly what card-based horror is, outside of cracking open a booster pack and accidentally spilling a full 32-oz Baja Blast onto a $3,000 card, so you’ll have to wait and see if these games can deliver the same tension. But there are three: Airlock, which is all about space; The City Devouring, which is for your Cthulhus; and Zombie World, which weirdly enough is about zombies.
Evil Hat Hits the Streets (of Jade)
And finally Evil Hat announced a new RPG based on the Green Bone urban fantasy novels. Full of supernatural martial arts, cool cars, and a whole lot of shoulder pads in suits, this game will put you into the city of Janloon, just before the events of Jade City. Using Evil Hat’s PARAGON system (which powers games like Agon and Deatmatch Island), you’ll set out to vie for control of the island where Janloon rests. Maybe you’ll make it out of the shadows, or maybe you’ll be swallowed up.
Cyberpunk‘s Single Player Mode and 2077 Campaign Book
Also R. Talsorian Games had a pretty big Gen Con slate too, this year. We got to see the upcoming new Single Player Mode, a sourcebook for Cyberpunk RED Solo Play that will drop late Summer or early fall this year. Alongside that is Night City 2045, a big sourcebook to Night City during the time of the red. This is your big guide to the City of Dreams (and also violence).
Finally, there’s news of a Cyberpunk 2077 Campaign book. This is a combination sourcebook and adventure book that will bridge the gap between Cyberpunk RED and Cyberpunk 2077. The first part of the book gives you all the rules you’ll need to play Cyberpunk RED in the Edgerunners era—while the second part of the book is a full campaign. The whole thing is made “in close cooperation with CD Projekt Red” so look for this sometime in 2026.
Of course, all of this is just the tip of the iceberg. Gen Con was big this year, and as we start gearing up for the next big tabletop con (coming all too quickly) I’m sure even more news and announcements will bubble up. But for now, the horizon is pretty full!
Now for PAX Unplugged!
