Marvel Rivals needs to take a page or five from Marvel: Crisis Protocol with these character. These have Vanguard written all over them.
With Marvel Rivals Season 3.5 kicking off tomorrow the character count grows. But so does the difference in class pools. There’s a lot of grumbling in the Marvel Rivals community about the lack of Vanguard options. And I get that. But I also play Marvel: Crisis Protocol and they have a deep roster of characters. I’ve even painted up every character that exists in both games.
Phoenix wasn’t out yet so I used Jean Grey as a stand in until I got my hands on the new Phoenix kit.
I’ve done this before and I’ve also done other more generic options. But today, I want to focus on just characters that I think would be great tanks. Please bring in the Vanguards!
Note: I’m going to skip characters that I’ve already mentioned and any supposed “leaked” characters. That includes a lot of X-Men (sorry Colossus and Rogue). So yeah, there are some pretty obvious options I’m skipping because of that reason.
Sabertooth
Currently up for grabs in the Brotherhood of Mutants Affiliation Pack ,Sabertooth is my first choice. He’s obviously the nemesis of Wolverine but for me he’s always been more than just a bigger version of Wolverine. Sabertooth would be a natural Vanguard because of his size — he’d be a great physical presence. I also think they could make his kit different from Wolverine to better fit his role. A passive boost to healing outside of combat would be huge as a start. But also the ability to wallcrawl and leap down with a feral might would be fitting, too.
The Blob
Speaking of a character with a physical presence The Blob fits the role of Vanguard very well! And look, I know he’s viewed as a bit of joke most of the time, but he’s got more potential in a hero shooter like Marvel Rivals. If he had a massive health pool and a way to give himself damage reduction we’d be on the right track. He’s also really hard to move! If the Thing is immune to certain movement effects, you’d think The Blob would at least be immune to knockback/pushes, too! Also, I really want him to get that Thunderous Splash as his Ultimate. A big AoE splash that shoves everyone back and maybe stuns? That would be awesome.
Apocalypse
One of my favorite characters Apocalypse fits the bill. He’s known to be super durable and he can also shape-shift his body into weapons. Not to mention his size manipulation. Apocalypse being a Vanguard makes too much sense. Allow him to have a ranged energy blast and maybe even give a single target buff to someone he makes his “horsemen” or something. It’s the survival of the fittest and Apocalypse would be quite fit!
Vision
I didn’t want this entire list to be X-Men related baddies (although we DO need more baddies in the game). Vision could also be a fantastic new type of tank — a Flying one. I know Doctor Strange can do a short burst but I think it would be really cool to have Vision be able to toggle a flying power. Maybe while he’s flying he takes more damage but moves waaay faster. But then he increases his density and drops like a rock — but gains some Damage Reduction. I also think he could have a “Get out of jail” move where he phases through things for a short duration. Physically he’s also super strong but he’s also got those energy blasts, too. The point is Vision would be a great Vanguard option.
Abomination
I know we got the Hulk already. And we’re getting Red Hulk in MCP. But how about his nemesis Abomination? He would be a great tank option because he’s pretty durable. Heck, anyone that goes heads-up with The Hulk has to be! I also think he could have some sort of burst AoE attack to mimic his radiation problems. Honestly, some sort of heal reduction attack from him would be very effective. Imagine a Vanguard that makes other tanks nervous. That might be too much and you’d really have to be careful with anti-heal powers in hero shooters. So I’d want it to be very limited. But the point is he’s not just The Hulk with a scaly hide.
Bonus: Nimrod

At first I was thinking Sentinels. And actually, yeah they would be great and all but they are also depicted as HUGE robots. In fact, there a wrecked Stark Sentinel in the game already. But then it hit me: Nimrod. I think the great mutant hunter would be another awesome tank. He’s not technically in Marvel: Crisis Protocol but he’s been teased. I think he could have some sort of adaptable Damage Reduction vs individual character attacks. It would be on some sort of timer and it would have to be pretty reasonable without being OP. But that would mimic his adaptable nature really well!
There’s so many cool Vanguard options just waiting to be used. I guess I’ll have to stick to using them in MCP…for now.
