Bastions let you play a sort of The Sims/Stardew Valley minigame in D&D—and here are some ways to spruce up your new home base!

Are you playing with Bastions in your games of D&D? If not, you might want to consider trying it. They’re a fun little system that gives players a chance to dabble in creativity within the world of your game. You can play out your ‘The Sims’ fantasies of designing the ultimate cool place to live and hiding all the toilets. Or not! You might love—as fans of games like the criticaly acclaimed Final Fantasy XIV do—the idea of making the best in-game home you possibly can. So with all that in mind, here are some magic items that are sure to level up any Bastion.

Decanter of Endless Water

First things first, if you’re going to have the ultimate abode, you’re going to want water. Just ask anyone who has ever gotten serious about Minecraft—water can do all sorts of weird and wonderful things. And the Decanter of Endless Water is a great way to transform any Bastion.

It gives you access to endless water. Anyone that knows its command word can call forth a splash, fountain, or even 30 foot long geyser of water. You could place one of these in a special fountain and have your Bastion stewards (or maybe a Magic Mouth spell) say the command word to summon forth a beautiful fountain on demand. Or get some running water moving through the cool features of your Bastion—just make sure you’ve got good drainage, because that water really is endless.

Baba Yaga’s Dancing Broom

Save on Bastion maintenance and show everyone that you’re magically potent with one of the animated brooms best known as Baba Yaga’s Dancing Broom. Originally designed by the archfey known as Baba Yaga, these brooms come to life and can do whatever you ask them to.

Obviously you could put one to work in your Bastion like a magical roomba, making sure your floors are swept at all times. But they can double up as guards if your Bastion is invaded. And they just make for a cool aesthetic any time you wander through.

Driftglobe

Driftglobes are magical lanterns that you can command to emit light per the Light spell (or the Daylight spell once per day). These thick glass orbs can light up your whole bastion instead of torches, and won’t that look cool.

If you’re thinking of using them to light your Bastion, you might consider talking to your DM to ask about easing the restriction on the “floating lantern” function of the Driftglobe. Normally they have to stay within 60 feet of whoever issues them a command to start hovering in the air and giving off light, but if you’re just putting them in your Bastion, it might be a good chance to rule of cool it.

Manual of Golems

Every Bastion needs a powerful guardian just for the aesthetic. And I guess also for the practicality of having a giant construct made of stone or iron or clay or flesh that can fight off opponents. Though stone or iron are probably the best ways to go.

But with a Manual of Golems you can design your own perfect golem guardian to keep watch over your Bastion while you’re away. And who doesn’t want to have a magical robot butler for when they’re at home?

Spirit Board

Finally, make any Bastion just a little creepier with the addition of a Spirit Board. This is perfect for those of you playing with the “non-special facilities” design of the Bastion system, because this can turn any room into a seance room.

Just keep your Spirit Board in a single parlour that you could conduct occult vision parties from. The Spirit Board lets you contact spirits via the Augury or the Commune spells. And any party can use one of these to gain insight about their next plans, while giving the whole Bastion a sort of spooky vibe.
