Machiavelli once said it is better to be feared than loved. But what if you want to be loved? These spells can help.

What’s the point of having magical powers if you don’t then become the adored hero of every peasant town you happen to pass through? Cosmic power capable of reshaping reality? Sure. Cool, I guess. But do the people LIKE you? Well. If you learn these five spells, and then don’t dump your Charisma, they just might.

Plant Growth

One of the best ways to be beloved by the people is to help them with what really matters. And sure, you might stave off the odd gnoll attack, or rampaging band of undead warriors. But if you really want the people to love you, Plant Growth is the way to go.

A single cast of this spell (which takes eight hours). will magicaly enrich all plants within a half-mile radius centered on a point you choose. Meaning you can over the course of a few days magically enrich all the farms nearby. This magical enrichment ensures that they will yield twice the normal amount of food when harvested. No one need be hungry or low on resources when you cast a spell like this. Even in the most strict feudal economies, they’ll have enough to pay their lord and still feed themselves like kings.

Control Weather

Of course, if you want to show off your sheer power – you might want a higher level spell. And sure, you could raise the dead, but that’s costly. And comes with its own problems. But Control Weather, if you can cast it, allows you to take control of all the weather within 5 miles for the duration of the spell.

You can end a life-threatening storm. Or a drought that might cause a famine. Make sure the winter isn’t harsh or that the summer is mild. A single spell slot can help a whole community survive the harshest conditions.

Purify Food and Drink

Speaking of harsh conditions—if you were worried that twice the food means a lot goes bad, don’t. A lower level spell—but arguably more important, is purify food and drink. This spell removes both poison AND rot from food in a sizable area whenever you cast it. Removing poison as well as rot is the key—you can keep food fresh. And ensure that a town’s drinking water is always safe to drink.

And when the people can eat and drink heartily, banditry and other crimes will decrease—you’ll save more lives than you could killing even a whole fortress of goblins. In the long run.

Create Food and Water

For much the same reason, Create Food and Water is an extremely useful spell for making the people love you. With a single 3rd level spell slot, you create enough food for 45 people, and enough water for 30. You might need to lean on Create or Destroy Water to supplement the water—but again, you create clean food and water that can stave off both malnutrition and dehydration.

And when the peasants don’t have to labor in the fields to survive, they’ll have the time and energy to help you, say by rising up against the corrupt baron/evil lich/sorcerer king/hobgoblin warlord or whoever else you’re trying to take down.

Fabricate

Another great way to make the people love you is by giving them the other thing in short supply. Solve your medieval housing crisis by instantly fabricating a house, eight five-foot cubes at a time. Or anything else. Fabricate lets you convert raw materials into products of the same material. You can build a bridge from a clump of trees.

Or a rope from a patch of hemp. You don’t even have to harvest the raw material. You can just magic whatever you need into existence (as long as you can use the appropriate artisan’s tools). And sure, it might take a little time—but you can transform a whole town with this kind of magic. And unlike a Wish it probably won’t even backfire.
