More RPG to video game news today as we get a first look at two of the upcoming NPC companions in a Starfinder: Afterlight preview.
It’s gotta be a sign of the times. Video games and RPGs getting along even better than ever? I’m for it, personally. And today, Polygon made an exclusive reveal of two of the companion NPCs from the upcoming Starfinder: Afterlight. This is the first-ever cRPG set in Starfinder’s world. Developed by Epictellers Entertainment and Paizo, Afterlight will take players on a ride through the galaxy of Starfinder, capturing the tone and the tumult of the sci-fantasy RPG.
Starfinder: Afterlight Companion Reveal – Tycho and Kole
Polygon showed off two of the companions. The first is Tycho, who is “a Ysoki Operative with a mechanical arm and a punk aeshthetic”. Tycho, voiced by Inel Tomlinson, is a down-on-his-luck tech user with a dour attitude. The sort to say, according to Epictellers co-founder Richard Pillosu, “stop hugging each other, come on let’s get serious here.”
In Starfinder, Ysoki are humanoid rats with a penchant for technological adaptation. They are small, scrappy, and nimble—they need every advantage they can get to survive in a hostile galaxy, which usually means making use of whatever tech they can. And because Paizo is Paizo, they of course, have cheek pouches that they can use to store up to a cubic foot of items,
A cranky little rat guy is absolutely perfect for the Starfinder universe. Especially if, at some point in the game, you can pull grenades out of your cheek pouches to get out of a sticky situation.
Contrasting Tycho is Kole. Kole is a Vesk Soldier, voiced by Fred Tatasciore, whom you might recognize as Soldier 76 or Solomon Grundy. Kole is much more of a big guy with a big gun, described by Polygon as “decidedly unserious.” His whole deal is inspired from 80s action movies—including shades of John McClane and Indiana Jones in his character design.
Vesk, in Starfinder, are basically space lizardfolk. They’re big, beefy, and covered with scales and spiky horns. They were once hell-bent on conquering the Pact Worlds, but after war with the Azlanti Star Empire, they forged a grudging alliance with the Pact Worlds in the face of a greater threat.
Cranky rat, goofy space lizard—everything I see about Starfinder: Afterlight makes me all the more excited for it.
Starfinder: Afterlight is putting together a crew – who do you hope to see in it?
